I am only about a month pregnant and my uterus is aching. It's a dull, throbbing ache and gets worse when I move. Is this common or does it indicate a problem?
Sometimes uterine pain can happen early in pregnancy, and it is difficult to know whether this might indicate an early miscarriage. My advice is to follow your body's knowledge, which will likely be to rest. You may also find that moving your pelvis will help.
I always suggest checking in with yourself and, if you can feel the presence of your baby on some level, check in there, too. You might use dreams, drawing, meditation, or your own deep-knowing to discover what is happening.
Sometimes an ultrasound is recommended, but this can only [help you understand] what is happening right now and not what will happen in the future. Again, I would advise you to wait and see rather than expose an unborn baby to an ultrasound, which has not been proven to be safe and which should be used with caution and only when the findings will make a significant impact on treatment. See my article here on ultrasound risks: http://www.sarahjbuckley.com/articles/ultrasound-scans.htm.
Personally, I experienced a dull pelvic ache in the early weeks with my second baby, and my body's impulse was to dance, moving my hips and pelvis. On some level, I felt that I needed to draw my baby down into my body, anchoring her more deeply into my womb-lining. This process also invited me to commit more deeply to this pregnancy and baby. After a few days the pain went away.
Sometimes miscarriage can happen, and again, some women have tuned in and felt the moment that the baby left, even before they felt pain and had bleeding. Miscarriage is very common, although it can also be a devastating experience, evoking a more powerful grief than we might imagine. See below for miscarriage support.
Experiences like these offer us opportunities to develop a deep and trusting relationship with our body, our internal knowing, and our babies-to-be.
Many blessings on your journey.
