5 Fast Ways to Overcome Mommy Mind

Growth Spurt

Last week, my son had his 3 week growth spurt. In a few short hours, my happy baby turned nightmarish as he refused anything but the breast.

I tend to overproduce milk, so once the growth spurt was over, nursing became an athletic endeavor — choking, constant spit up, frustration.  My son became a generally unhappy baby who couldn’t be soothed with the boob and couldn’t sleep without a lot of help.

Too Much Milk

I was burnt out and low on sleep.

I knew the solution — block feeding. But when I took to the internet and all the “recommendations” say to wait until 6 weeks.

That’s when it happened — crazy mommy mind.

Thankfully, there is a remedy for Mommy Mind!

Every person has 3 bodies — the physical body, the emotional body, and the mental body.

3 bodies

When one goes on, the other two turn off.

This is great to know, because if you are going nuts in one, you can reset by using a different body.

One of the best ways to turn off the mind or emotions is walk, but who has 30 minutes everyday?

Luckily, there are other ways to recover from Mommy Mind that can be done in 3 minutes or less*!

Option 1: Dead Bug Exercise

Dead Bug

  • Okay while pregnant/moon cycle: No/Yes
  • Position: laying on floor
  • Music: Upbeat and fun (Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, Happy by Pharrell Williams, etc)
  • Duration: 3 Min
  1. Raise your arms and legs to the sky
  2. Shake your hands and feet

To end: Take a deep breath in, flex your hands and feet, hold your breath as long as you can

If you have time: lay in corpse pose for 1 min

Notes:

  • You will look silly, so if babe can see you, that may buy you time.
  • Focus on your core while you shake — make sure your back stays flat on the floor the entire exercise.
  • Keep your knees and elbows as straight as possible

Imagery: You don’t really need any here, just try not to think about what you look like!

Option 2: Push Away the Crazies

Push

  • Okay while pregnant/moon cycle: Yes/Yes (breathe normally though)
  • Position: standing
  • Music: Fun with a good beat
  • Duration: 3 Min
  1. Take your palms, face them forward at the chest and push forward, like you are pushing something out of the way
  2. Twist to the right and push
  3. Return center and push
  4. Twist left and push
  5. Repeat

Breath: Exhale out nose with each push

To End: Take a deep inhale, raise arms above head, exhale out mouth like blowing out a candle

Notes:

  • Coordinate “pushes” with music
  • Push breath out by pulling navel in towards spine
  • Relax and have fun, let your knees and body move with the music

Imagery: Push your frustrations, annoyances, etc and say “so long sucker!”

Option 3: Sweep the Mind

Sweep the Mind

Note: These pictures were drawn using the pink paper, 2 markers, and one pen my daughter “forgot” to clean up. Hope this helps, mamas!
