Breastfeeding and Bonding: Trying out the new Boppy Nursing Pillow

We know that breastfeeding is one of the most important parts of the new mama and baby attachment process, and we’re always on the lookout for products that help ease that transition. The Boppy Pillow is a longtime favorite of Mothering moms looking for a nursing aid. As part of our Mothering Mavens program, three of our Mothering Mavens tried out the brand new Boppy Nursing Pillow and told us all about their experiences!

Providing Support: Why use a breastfeeding pillow?

The three Mavens who participated in this program all had newborn babies who were under 8 weeks old when they received the Boppy Nursing Pillow, and all three breastfed older children. They all agreed that the number one benefit of a nursing pillow is to provide support for the new mom.

As Chapsie, a lactation consultant and newborn nurse, and mama to 2 including baby Shiloh, explained, “It is a natural tendency to lean forward and slouch your shoulders forward when nursing and positioning baby at the breast, and this can be KILLER on your back and neck muscles. I constantly have to remind myself that I need to keep my shoulders back and relaxed. Nursing pillows can help with that.”

Lots of new moms need that reminder or support, especially in the early days of breastfeeding when baby is still learning to latch and mom is still getting comfortable. LightForest, mama to two including baby E, said that one of the biggest benefits of a breastfeeding pillow is the “support it can provide a mom who needs to nurse in an upright position (because she’s healing from a C-section, for example).”

Impressions of the Boppy Nursing Pillow

Our Mavens were all happy to receive their Boppy Nursing Pillows and all noticed the same thing: how it looked! “I loved the fabric color and pattern!” LightForest told us, and Firespiritmelody, mama to 4 including baby Griffin, added that “The color/pattern is nice, it’s sturdy but still soft and squishy.”

Chapsie liked the color and patterns so much that she said, “I’m totally not embarrassed to have it laying out on my couch. I liked how squishy the pillow side was, it looked very comfortable but still supportive.”

Once our Mavens started using the Boppy Nursing pillow, they were pleased with how it supported them during breastfeeding.

“I really like how wide it is – I have big babies and I can see the new Boppy working for quite some time,” Firespiritmelody said. “The new Boppy is definitely more supportive! The soft side forms to my lap nicely.” LightForest mentioned that her baby’s latch improved with some help from the Boppy Nursing Pillow: “Once I did get the baby latched on, I found that he stayed latched on so much better when I used the pillow. There was much less popping on and off.”

Continued Use of the Boppy Nursing Pillow

After using the Boppy Nursing Pillow, all three of our Mavens said they would recommend it to other moms looking for a breastfeeding pillow.

LightForest acknowledged that some moms have very specific needs or preferences when it comes to breastfeeding, and said she would recommend the Boppy to new moms “who are healing from c-sections, moms having trouble keeping a good latch, and moms who plan to do most of their nursing in a very upright seated position such as a glider.”

Firespiritmelody said, “I think having a nursing pillow can help get the breastfeeding relationship off to a good start and overall I’ve been impressed with this one!”

And Chapsie, an RN/IBCLC, said she would likely recommend the Boppy Nursing Pillow to women she came into contact with professionally. “I would recommend it to a friend over other nursing pillows, absolutely,” she said. “I think it is a nice thing to have in the very beginning as you are learning to nurse so that you can use your hands to help with latching instead of worrying about holding the baby.”

A message from Boppy:

Developed with a Lactation Consultant, the new Boppy Nursing Pillow was developed specifically for breastfeeding moms. Two distinct feeding surfaces means you can choose the support you need: the firm flat surface features a soft minky fabric and provides a stable platform for nursing, while the softer fiber-fill side offers a more snuggly surface. The wide arm design fits all moms and the removable belt keeps baby snug against your body during breastfeeding. Best of all, the entire pillow is washable – simply remove the foam insert and belt and toss the pillow into the wash! See more here

 1. I tested this pillow out via Amazon Vine and, while I prefer the original Boppy, quite liked this model. It washes so well, which is a plus.
