Target is stepping up to the plate and knocking it out of the park with their new breastfeeding policy!
After several incidences of mothers being asked to move or cover while breastfeeding, Target has implemented a new training policy. This is great news for breastfeeding mothers everywhere, and hopefully more businesses will follow suit! While Target has claimed to be breastfeeding-friendly in the past, clearly their employees were lacking consistent training.
The fuzzy photo says:
Guests may openly breastfeed in our stores or ask where they can go to breastfeed their child. When this happens, remember these points:
- Target’s policy supports breastfeeding in any area of our stores, including our fitting rooms, even if others are waiting
- If you see a guest breastfeeding in our stores, do not approach her
- If she approaches and asks you for a location to breastfeed, offer the fitting room (do not offer the restroom as an option)
This is the kind of training and policy we need to see in all businesses! It is time for mothers to be able to breastfeed freely in public, without fear of repercussions. A supportive environment and society will undoubtedly help increase breastfeeding rates, which is an important matter of public health.
