Investigating Risk Factors For ECC

La Leche League International recommends that researchers, parents and professionals ask the following pertinent background questions when evaluating a child for ECC:

1. Is there a family/genetic history of tooth decay or poor enamel formation?
2. Did the mother have any illnesses with high fever and/or requiring antibiotics during pregnancy?
3. What was the mother's diet during pregnancy and lactation? Did it include caffeine, a potential cariogenic agent, and sufficient calcium?

4. Was the child born prematurely?
5. When were solids added to the child's diet? What does the child eat and drink on a regular basis?
6. Has the child received sweetened medicines, including vitamins, antibiotic and cough syrups, on a frequent basis?
7. Has a link between the bacteria in the parent's mouth and dental decay in the child been investigated?
8. What type of dental hygiene is practiced with the child?
