Teachable Moments * Gift the jobs of composting and recycling to your children; give them gardening gloves and power. * Take your children to your local landfill and water-treatment facility to show them what happens to our waste. * Shop at places that make socially and environmentally responsible choices, and bring your own bags (keep them handy in the car). * Use your purchases to make a statement about what you value. Carpool with a friend to consignment shops around the area and then support them with your own kids' stuff. * Diaper your precious babies in cotton. * Examine leaky toilets and faucets as well as lightbulb and battery choices. Have your kids help make changes in your house toward energy conservation. * Turn off your TV. * Tell your children why you make the choices you do, from the time they are in the womb until they are bigger than you. * Finally, I wouldn't be a dedicated teacher if I didn't remind you to read to your children. -- Heather Cori Rader |
