What to Avoid

The Feingold program eliminates:

Synthetic food dyes - once made from coal-tar oil, they are now manufactured from petroleum

Artificial flavors - These can be made from anything; there are no prohibitions of what can be added to food to flavor it. Artificial flavors are often created from combinations of hundreds of synthetic chemicals.

Three preservatives - BHA, BHT, TBHQ, all of which are made from petroleum.

Salicylates are removed, then reintroduced one at a time. Many sensitive people are able to use all or most natural salicylates.

Natural Salicylates
almonds
apples, apple cider, apple juice
apricots
berries (all)
cherries
cloves
coffee
cucumbers & pickles
currants
grapes & raisins
nectarines
oil of wintergreen
oranges
peaches
peppers
plums, prunes
tangerines
tea
tomatoes

Also: Aspirin and medicines that contain aspirin can be removed from the diet and later reintroduced and tested.
