Homeopathy in the Home – Natural, Holistic Healing and How it Works – Part 1

homeopathyI started looking into homeopathy years ago because I didn’t like not understanding health and how the body works.  I felt uncomfortable that I had to rely on doctors for every little strange pain, burn, or bonk.  After studying homeopathy and working with lots of families, I realized that others felt similarly, they also wanted to be empowered to understand homeopathy, and to use it for themselves and their families at home.

What a gift it is to be educated in natural healing and to use first-aid remedies with confidence.  When you learn a little bit about homeopathy and how to use simple remedies, it is something that you can use at home or take along on a trip, knowing that you have a handle on how to deal with some typical first-aid situations effectively and naturally.

With this in mind, I wanted to share this four-part blog on homeopathy, what it is and how to use it.  Even if you have been using homeopathy for a while, you will likely gain some new insight here because this is told from the classical homeopathic perspective, which tends to go deeper than just symptom relief.

Very basically, homeopathy is a holistic approach to health – this means that we are treating all levels of the human being.  When a person is healthy, all aspects of him or her (mental, emotional, and physical) operate in harmony.  The person is flexible and adapts with ease.  She is resilient, creative, and energetic.  The three levels – emotional, mental, and physical – are always touched by homeopathy in order for true and deep healing to occur.

Now, bear with me while I get a little didactic –

Homeopathy was invented by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician.  He translated medical texts and thereby tested one of the medicinal plants on himself (peruvian bark, a component of quinine, an anti-malarial medicine).  He experienced all of the typical symptoms of malaria.  What he found through this experiment is this – the medicine that creates symptoms in a healthy person will cure the same symptoms in a sick person.  This is the basis of homeopathy – you find the homeopathic remedy that expresses similar symptoms to the ones that need to be cured.

Where is homeopathy used?

Homeopathy was very popular in America in the 20th century.  There were many homeopathic hospitals and Universities around the Country.  Homeopathy is now widely used in India, Mexico, South America, and much of Europe.

Lets get more specific about how homeopathy works

In any holistic approach, all three levels of the human being – emotional, mental, and emotional – are taken into account.   These three parts of the person are balanced when in health.  Often when one of these is off kilter, the others will be as well.  Each person has a very unique way of expressing symptoms on all three levels.

Every person has her own unique way of becoming sick

In an acute reaction or illness (under six weeks), several people can have a bee sting, the same virus, or an ear infection, and all will react slightly differently.  One may be thirsty for cold water and reclusive, the other may want hot tea and feel fearful, the third may have a red, dry face and not want any water.  This is why as homeopaths, we look at the quirky symptoms – because they help define the differences in how different people react to the same illness.

If we treat the illness or diagnosis alone, then we are only treating the symptoms, not the whole, unique person.  In Allopathic medicine, medications treat the symptoms as an invading force while in homeopathic medicine, the person’s very special reaction to that illness is treated, balanced, and boosted.

Symptom Suppression

The reason why holistic practitioners don’t want to treat only the diagnosis of an illness is because of what is called suppression.  Usually, when a superficial physical symptom is treated without attention to other more emotional or unique symptoms, it is palliated – the symptom becomes temporarily hidden.  This does little to address the root problem of the first-aid situation or illness, the symptom is simply disguised until later when it may pop up again.  The problem with repeated suppression is that it can gradually weaken the body and potentially push problems deeper into more vital and important organs.

I always tell parents at this point not to worry – a few bouts of anti-biotics are not going to do any damage.  However, what we want, ideally, in holistic treatment, is deep healing, to cure the person and get at the root of the problem, not to hide symptoms.

Why do we get sick?

Internal imbalance is often the cause of many acute illnesses.  This can come from chronic stress, grief, exposure to the elements, loss, major changes, etc.  The body’s energy system (called the vital force) is strengthened and balanced through homeopathy because the original cause of distress is recognized when prescribing a remedy.  Mental, emotional, and physical disturbance can be passed down genetically as well.  Classical homeopathic treatment aims to lessen the influence of these genetic taints not only on the physical level, but the emotional and mental as well.

So how do the little white sugar pills actually work?

When the homeopathic remedy is selected, it is chosen to resonate as closely as possible with the patient and his or her own unique way of responding to illness.  The remedy essentially programs the vital force to resonate with that individual and his specific reactions to the illness on the emotional, mental, and/or physical plane.  In other words, the correct remedy will mirror the patient’s special way of dealing with the particular illness or first aid situation that she has come in contact with.  An example of this is the bee sting – your child and his friend next door are both stung by a bee while playing together.  Both children develop swelling and redness, however one child is thirsty and fearful while the other has a headache and is angry.  Each child will require a different remedy due to his reaction to the bee sting.

In the next part of this four-part blog, I will describe the healing crisis, the direction of cure, when to treat homeopathically and when not to, and how exactly to take a remedy.

Hope to see you there!

  1. Thank you for the introduction. It came at the exact time I needed it. I tried to treat my kids’ cold systems with Boiron pills and did not feel confident because I know very little about homeopathy.

  2. Do you have any recommendations for finding a family homeopath in the metro west Boston area? Looking forward to following your blog! Is there a way to get an RSS feed for your blog? Thank you!!

  3. Go to NASH, the North American Society of Homeopaths, there are practitioners listed in most states who are Classical Homeopaths http://homeopathy.org
They are registered and monitored in terms of their education and supervisory experience.
    Good luck! Katharina
