Interview with Moms Like Me

I was recently interviewed by MomsLikeMe.com, and I thought I’d share a snippet of the interview with the mamas here on Mothering.com.

Without further ado:

Q&A: Marketing and Motherhood Mold-Breaker Danielle LaPorte

Danielle LaPorte. Writer. Motivational speaker. “Firestarter.” New-Age business advisor. “Super rogue” entrepreneurial creative force. Inventor of “white hot truths.” Mother.

If you haven’t heard of Danielle, you need to stop what you’re doing and check her out at whitehottruth.com. While you’re at it, follow her on Twitter. You won’t regret it.

We’re so glad this uber-busy lady took a few moments from her decidedly and happily “unbalanced” schedule to speak to MomsLikeMe.com about her liberal, kid-directed, parent-oriented child-rearing philosophy. We know you’ll appreciate the advice she has to offer.

Q) Danielle, what kind of mom are you?

A grateful one. My 6-year-old boy is just so lovely and shiny and strong. He makes it easy for me to be his parent.

By most definitions, I’m very liberal. But I provide structure with a lot of ritual … inside jokes and special habits and songs and things we collect. Daily touchstones. Fundamentally, I feel that it’s my job to help him express himself, so I have to follow his lead, his cues. Whatever he’s interested in, we go down that path.

I’m also very affirmative with him that his father and I are number one in his life. I let him know that, in no uncertain terms, it’s our opinions of him that matter most — not his friends, not his teacher, not his grandparents. It’s critical that he be seeking our approval above anyone else’s. There’s a fabulous book called “Hold On to Your Kids” that maps out how important it is to raise parent-oriented, rather than peer-oriented children. Brilliant stuff.

Q) What “white hot truths” do you have to share with other moms?

On parenting…

at the end of the day, your child’s life is their own. Even when they’re little, they are making choices on a soul level; they are intentionally manifesting. They’re not here to please us. Not even close.

I think, the more we just let our kids just “be,” the stronger they become. Beautiful.
