Postpartum depression is often seen as a shameful secret few want to admit to. When new moms realize that parenting is not all rainbows and cupcakes, they are sometimes taken by surprise and until lately, have little support.

But there are many people trying to change that including celebrities like: Chrissy Teigen, Hayden Panettiere and Gwyneth Paltrow who bravely share their struggles with Postpartum depression (PPD) to help mothers everywhere.

Now, a new clinic in New York, The Motherhood Center, is working hard too — they are helping pregnant women and moms who are suffering from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) to find the support they need to heal and live their fullest lives with their children.

The staff of The Motherhood Center is comprised of social workers and physicians who focus on the mental health of mothers, and offer things like classes, counseling sessions and day programs.
motherhood-center-new-yorkFounded by Paige Bellenbaum, who was inspired because she dealt with her own frightening postpartum depression eleven years ago, the Motherhood Center is a place where women can seek and find immediate help for those terrifying moments that can be so dangerous.
Bellenbaum says that the idea for a center was actually a combination of Dr. Catherine Birndorf and Billy Ingram brainstorming and joining forces with her to bring it to fruition. Ingram, an Australian native, had seen a similar model in an Australian hospital and along with Birndorf, thought it a great idea for the U.S.

The center has only been open for four weeks, but they’ve already seen over 40 women and received dozens of calls. Bellenbaum says the mothers of the program are grateful for the services and can’t imagine where things may have ended up without their help.

The Motherhood Center of New York operates independently of any hospital, so patients who seek help there do not need a referral in order to get an appointment. Any mother can call at any time, and the center is currently working on their non-profit 501(c)3 status so that they will be able to offer more free and/or reduced rates for women who need specialized services.

Bellenbaum hopes to get the New York Center firmly established and invaluable, and then will look to spread the hope and help across the country. This is good news for babies and mamas everywhere!
