New “Extreme Parenting” Show to Air This Fall

extreme parentingA new reality TV show titled Extreme Parenting is likely to hit the airwaves this Fall. The show is being developed by Jeff Collins, creator of such sensational programs as The Pregnant Man and Bridezillas, and will showcase the “extreme” lives of attachment parents–including at least one mom from the well-known TIME feature.

Collins is quoted as saying:

Breastfeeding beyond infancy is just one of the topics we plan to cover. We’ve discovered people are raising kids in all kinds of un-traditional ways these days and some people find their methods to be extreme.

I’m fascinated by the way other people raise their children. I grew up in a very conservative small town and everyone kind of raised their kids with the exact same values so it’s interesting to me to see so many people breaking the mold of tradition.

What do you think? Could a show like this create a chance for open conversation about APers who are “breaking the mold of tradition,” or is it just another way to prey on families to make a quick buck?

You can read more about it on Yahoo and on the San Francisco Chronicle‘s website.

  1. I think it depends entirely on how the show frames it. It seems like nine times out of ten, these shows set the tone. If the families are portrayed in a, “just like you and me, except _____,” light — I think it could be a great way to show the different ways that we all parent. However if the show sets the tone as, “Holy shit, do you believe this crazy thing these people do?” Well… not so much.

I also think it depends on the families being portrayed. Let’s face it — there’s more than one way to attachment parent a child. The representative sample is going to set the tone for a lot of new watchers, I’m sure.

  2. This is absurd! There is already a stigma on breastfeeding, and other “non-mainstream” parenting methods, such as cloth diapering, and not CIO. This is going to be a disaster!

  3. This show is gunna be awful and very one sided Im sure. If they want to feature extreme parenting why dont they feature people who think breastfeeding is “gross” or people who let there babbies cry themselves to sleep? THATS EXTREME PARENTING

I do not see how anything good could some from this show, I hope at least the people in show will be making bank for being ridiculed on national television.
