Public Breastfeeding Law

Federal and state lawmakers are responding to their breastfeeding constituents' concerns regarding the right to nurse in public. At the state level, at least 15 states have enacted laws giving mothers the right to breastfeed anywhere she has a right to be. Breastfeeding is not considered an act of indecent exposure, whether or not the nipple or areola is exposed during the feeding.

At the national level, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) has introduced the Right to Breastfeed Act (H.R. 1848), which ensures a mother's right to breastfeed her child anywhere on federal property where they are authorized to be.
