What is the difference between a Screening Mammogram vs. Diagnostic Mammogram? A screening mammogram is done to a patient who has no symptoms, but who is at risk for developing breast cancer. The goal of the screening test is to find disease early, before the patient knows she has it. Annual screening mammograms are recommended for women beginning at age 40. High risk patients may be advised by their physicians to begin screening before age 40. A diagnostic mammogram is performed on a patient who has signs or symptoms of a problem such as a lump, pain, thickening, nipple discharge, or a change in breast size or shape. The goal is of the diagnostic test is to see if a disease is present or not, and/or what kind of disease is present. Diagnostic mammograms are generally performed regardless of age, lactation status, or recent normal mammography results. |
