If your healthcare provider suggests vitamin D drops for your baby, you may be confused. You've read the literature and know that breastmilk is the best form of nutrition for babies. You've never come across any information on vitamin D deficiency. What are you going to do? How can you decide?

It may help to have the following questions at hand to ask your healthcare provider:

  • What is rickets?
  • Is my baby at risk of developing rickets?
  • What are my options?
  • Will it help if I increase vitamin D in my diet, through foods and/or supplements?
  • How much do the vitamin D drops cost?
  • Will my insurance company cover the cost?
  • What if I choose not to give my baby the supplement?

Above all, know that you have the right to make the final decision-and the right to trust your own intuition about what is best for your baby.
