Paul Fleiss: Breastfeeding Champion

Paul Fleiss is the doctor you always wanted to have. Trained as a pharmacist, an osteopathic physician, and a medical doctor, Fleiss is a well-respected physician who has been in practice for more than 40 years. He is the author of Sweet Dreams: A Pediatrician’s Secrets for Baby’s Good Night’s Sleep and What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Circumcision and has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. He is known for his expertise in breastfeeding and has been on the La Leche League International Health Advisory Council for more than 30 years.

Fleiss has received several research grants to study the excretion of pharmaceutical drugs in human milk, and has expertise in herbal medicine. He is a clinical assistant profession of pediatrics at the University of Southern California and the UCLA Schools of Medicine.

Fleiss is a vocal opponent of medical circumcision and serves on the Professional Advisory Board of the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Center (NOCIRC). He has written extensively on the case against circumcision and the care of the uncircumcised penis.

Fleiss is a much beloved, old-fashioned doctor. Laura Fishel-Webb, a nurse on his staff, says, “The children are his first and foremost concern. Business hours are not enforced. He never refuses to see a sick child.” New dad Doug Piburn calls him “a sailor on the sometimes choppy seas of ambiguity.” He admires Dr. Fleiss “because he makes decisions based not just on empirical data but on human observation as well.” And, old friend and LLL founder, Marian Tompson, says, “Paul is always willing to go out of his way to help the mothers who come to him for help. His common sense, intuition, and appreciation of the natural order of things bring a wisdom to his practice that is not often seen today.”

He is the father of six adult children and maintains an active medical practice in Los Angeles.
