Police Officer Breastfeeds Abandoned Baby
In a simple but powerful act of nurturing, a police officer potentially saved a baby's life by breastfeeding the abandoned infant while waiting for medics to arrive.

News media reports that a local in the rural forest area of Colombia heard crying, discovered the baby, and alerted police. Officer and new mother Luisa Fernanda Urrea arrived and breastfed the baby, potentially saving the life of the child.

The baby was starving and at risk for hypothermia.

Urrea told local media: 'I'm a new mother and I have milk and I recognised the needs that this poor little creature had.' The baby was found with umbilical cord still attached.

In 2012, pregnant mother of one, Maria Kristensen of Denmark, spotted a bundle on the side of the road while traveling with her husband and son in Turkey. According to reports, Kristensen and her family were in a taxi on their way to an airport when they saw what turned out to be an abandoned baby wrapped in fabric on the side of the road. This baby, too, still had her umbilical cord attached.

Maria says, "The mother had packed her into pink clothes and put a blanket around her... She was really hot, so I hurried to get her in the car and asked the driver to [turn] on the air conditioner. But there was no life in her."

After attempting to cool the baby down with water, Maria asked their taxi driver if she could nurse the infant.

The reason Maria had to ask? Cultural stigma against nursing in public. And yet, this simple act potentially saved the abandoned baby's life, as she began to perk up at the breast. At the very least, the baby received the love and nurturing that all babies deserve, if only for a brief moment.

The phrase "I make breast milk; what's your superpower?" is a common sentiment amongst breastfeeders, and most people are aware of the life-saving properties of breast milk itself. But what these mothers did was truly heroic, in the most simple way.
