If you’ve seen any of my previous recipes, you might have noticed I’m a big fan of stir-frys. Anything that has great flavor and doesn’t take hours in the kitchen but is nourishing for my family gets an “A” in my book.
This budget friendly stir-fry is a favorite of my husband. It combines the salty flavors of sausage with the sweet flavors of red onions and apples. It cooks in under 20 minutes and is a great meal for busy nights.
Prep Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Serves: 4-6
- 1 pound ground sausage (nitrate free if possible)
- 2 red onions
- 2 apples (we like Fiji or Granny Smith in this)
- 1 small head of cabbage
- 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder, salt and pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of sage
What to do:
In large skillet or wok , brown the sausage until cooked and remove from pan. While meat is cooking, thinly slice the cabbage, apples and onions.
Heat the butter in the pan until melted and add onion and apple. Cook for 3-5 minutes until starting to soften. Add cabbage and continue cooking until cabbage is soft (may need to add a couple tablespoons of water and cover for a couple minutes to speed the softening, especially with red cabbage). Spice to taste and add sausage back to pan. Serve immediately.
