The Amazing Banana Opening Trick

bananaWith your thumbnail make a gash in the top inside of the banana right below the stem. Do this surreptitiously when you’re kids aren’t looking.

Then hold the banana upside down by the stem with the gash side facing you.

Say, “I AM MORE MAGICAL THAN THE AMAZING RANDY. I AM MORE DARING THAN EVEL KNIEVEL. I CAN OPEN THIS BANANA USING MY MAGICAL POWERS. ARE YOU READY?”

(Since kids will figure out the trick pretty quickly, you’ve got to milk it for all it’s worth the first time you do it.)

Flick your wrist so you are flicking the banana down and away from you. PRESTO-ALA-KAZAM, the banana peel will give way on the gash you made and you’ll be holding an open banana by a piece of peel.

Tah dah!

  1. Love this! Can’t wait to try it on my daughter. Her favorite is to say, “Mommy! I’ll turn on the TV with my brain!” Then she presses power on the remote. I pretend that I didn’t see her do it.

  2. Kris, my 17-year-old neighbor just showed us that trick (after I test drove this post on her). Even though I saw her doing it (with a pin), I’m not sure I totally got it. I’ll have to practice and then write about it. We also love drawing funny faces on bananas (and using the stem for hair). That could be another follow-up post!

  3. It’s really easy. I think I might not be describing it very well. It’s the kind of thing that as soon as you see someone do it once, you get it. Putting it into words is harder. Let us know if you do try it on your niece, Roxanne.
