Top 10 Best Jogging Strollers Moms Love

We've found the top 10 jogging strollers moms love

You might want to stay active with your little ones all year through, but it can be hard to find a workout that fits both your needs and keeps your children occupied, particularly during different times of the year.

Jogging strollers are a great way to help with both!

Jogging strollers are not only a great way to stay active with your little ones in tow, but they also provide you with the ability to take your stroller in places standard strollers can’t go. Most jogging strollers are equipped with all-terrain tires allowing them to navigate rough roads a little easier. They allow for fast movement when running or jogging, as well as provide a comfortable place for your child to sit while you are out and about.

Do You Need Both a Jogging Stroller and a Regular Stroller?

Whether or not you need both a jogging stroller and a regular stroller is up to you. Jogging strollers tend to be a bit bulkier so if you live in an urban area that requires you to navigate tight spaces and small doorways, you might want an additional stroller that is smaller and easier to manage. However, many people do just fine using their jogging stroller as a regular stroller, and they don’t find the need to double up on several different types.

What to Look for in the best jogging strollers?

There are many different features available on various brands of jogging strollers, but there are some safety features that are of the utmost importance. These safety features should be kept in mind when you are shopping around for the best jogging stroller for you and your family.

  • Adjustable handle– The adjustable handle allows you to put the handle in a place that is comfortable for you. The height can be adjusted for whoever is pushing the stroller. This is especially important when doing fast action movement, like jogging or running, so that the individual pushing the stroller is comfortable and able to move easily preventing slips or falls.
  • Front locking wheel– Many jogging strollers give the option to lock the front wheel of your stroller, which is recommended during running. This helps prevent the stroller from tipping over if you are to lose control because of fast movement.
  • Foot brake– A foot brake is essential. This allows you to lock the stroller in place when you are at a stop. Some jogging strollers only have a hand brake, which doesn’t lock in place putting the child at risk when you come to a stop.
  • Safety strap- A good jogging stroller will have a safety strap that you can attach to your wrist. This helps to ensure that the stroller does not roll away if you happen to lose your grip on the handlebars while running.
  • 5-point harness system– Having a harness system in place for your child keeps them safer, especially when the stroller is moving fast.

Additional Accessories for Your Jogging Strollers

There are some other items that you might want to consider when purchasing your jogging stroller. These are often an additional purchase and completely optional, but they will make your jogging stroller much more comfortable and more convenient to use.

  • Infant seat adapter– Many jogging strollers are not recommended to be used by babies under six months old. However, many brands of jogging strollers offer infant seat adapters that allow you to safely place your baby’s car seat on top of the stroller giving you the ability to start your workout regimen earlier and more safely.
  • Snack trays- Snack trays not only help to keep your child in their seat but they also provide a place for them to hold their snacks, drinks, and toys.
  • Handlebar console– Some jogging strollers do not come with a handlebar console so mom and dad don’t have any place to put their keys or water bottles. It is a good idea to invest in one if your stroller doesn’t come with it for ease and convenience.
  • Toy holders and straps for kids- Nothing is worse than being in the groove of a good run and having to stop for toys and snack cups that are being thrown out of the stroller. Toy straps allow you to buckle the toy to the stroller so even kids with the most robust arms can’t throw them out.

Things to Keep Kids Occupied While in the Jogging Strollers

If you are an active parent, chances are that you will be keeping your child in the stroller for an extended period of time while you run or workout. Here are some things you can give to your child or do together while they are sitting in the stroller to keep them occupied:

  • Books
  • Snacks
  • Songs- use a Bluetooth speaker
  • Count cars- count a specific color or the number of a certain type
  • Favorite toys- use a tether to keep them from being flung out of the stroller
  • Naptime- Head outside for your child’s nap and let them sleep in the stroller. This way you might be able to at least get a quiet workout in. And research shows that allowing your child to nap outside is beneficial to them.
  • Go on a new path- Head out for your workout in a new spot. New sights, sounds, and animals can be enticing and exciting.
  • Visit the park after (or even during) your workout- Sometimes the promise of doing something fun after mom or dad gets their workout in is all your child needs. You can head over to the playground after your workout or do a warm-up run or jog and then workout with some of the exercises below while your child plays.

Workouts Besides Running You Can Do with Your Jogging Strollers

Running isn’t the only workout you can do with your stroller. You can change up your workout by adding in some of these strength training exercises that use the stroller for support or that you can quickly do as intervals between short running bursts.

  • HIIT workouts– Use the stroller for your cardio intervals and then do other strength training exercises like the ones below using your stroller:
    • Incline pushups– Place your hands on the front of the stroller with your feet on the ground. Your body will be at a slight incline. Complete the pushup as usual for 15 reps.
    • Decline pushups- Place your feet on the front of the stroller with your hands on the ground. Your body will be at a slight decline. Complete the pushup as usual for 15 reps.
    • Balance/Bulgarian split lunges– With your back to the stroller, place your back foot on the front of your stroller. Complete a lunge as usual. Switch sides. Repeat 12 to 15 times on each side.
    • Stroller squats– This is just like a regular squat only you can either hold onto the handlebar for stability, or you can stand in front of your child playing peek-a-boo. You can also make it a one-legged squat by holding onto the handlebar for stability and then squatting down on one leg while the other is raised about 6 to 8 inches off the ground. Do 10 to 15 regular squats or 10 to 15 one-legged squats on each leg.
    • Walking lunges- Take your walk to the next level by slowing it down and lunging it out while you walk. Do 12 to 24 reps.
    • Calf raises- Stand behind the stroller and, using the handlebar for stability, raise up onto your toes. Go back down but not all the way; slightly hover and then raise back up again. Repeat 12 to 15 times.
    • Chest press– Find a slight hill. Stand with the stroller in front of you while it is going uphill and press it up the hill while keeping your feet firmly in place. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
    • Rows- Find a slight hill. Stand with the stroller going downhill. Pull the stroller towards your chest. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
    • Plank shoulder taps- Get into a plank position in front of the stroller. Sing “Row,  Row Your Boat” as you tap the opposite shoulder, alternating between each shoulder. Repeat if desired.
  • Walking– Who says you always have to run? Jogging strollers are great for taking brisk walks.
  • Trail Jogs- Taking a walk around the neighborhood is great but local hikes or trails are a great change of scenery and they often offer plenty of hills to help get your legs pumping and working a little harder. Some jogging strollers are made specifically for trails and rugged terrain, so if hiking is something you did before kids and you would like to keep it up, then you might want to look for a jogging stroller that is equipped for more than just the pavement.
  • Virtual Races- Some of us need a little extra motivation to get ourselves out there on a daily basis. Virtual races are a great way to give yourself the push you need to get out there even when you really don’t want to. Because who wouldn’t want a medal or a cool t-shirt for every workout? Many of the virtual races have a large portion of the proceeds go towards a specific cause or charity, so you can not only get your workout in while training or completing the race, but you can also give back to the community, a cause that is important to you, or your favorite charity.

Apps to Help You Keep Track of Your Workouts

If you go and workout but don’t tell anyone about it, does it even count? Well yes, but it’s always fun to see how far you’ve gone, how many calories you’ve burned, and your heart rate. There are hundreds of apps available to help you track your progress as you work out with your jogging stroller (or without if you’re lucky). Even fitness devices like the Apple Watch or the Fitbit will display how your workout is progressing right on your wrist. And even with a jogging stroller, you can tell your device or your app which kind of workout you’re doing (running, HIIT, hiking, walking) so it can track properly. Here are some of our favorite apps that will help you track your workouts and give you some actual workouts you can do with and without the stroller. Some of the apps even help you track your daily nutrition as that is an important part of fitness and wellness:

  • Fitbit Coach– For use with your Fitbit, this comprehensive app will track all your daily activity as well as your sleep
  • Map My Fitness– This is a logging app that will track your running routes, pace, and your daily activities.
  • app– This is a comprehensive app that not only tracks your fitness and your workouts, but also gives you workouts you can do at home including strength training and weightlifting.
  • Activ Couch to 5k– If you are new to running, this app will give you a program to meet your running goals.
  • Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout app– Parents don’t always have a ton of time, but with this 7-minute workout app from Johnson & Johnson, you can get a quick workout in before your child is crying to be let loose from the stroller.
  • Sworkit– This free app gives you a variety of workout options that are targeted by intensity, body area, and type of workout. Its an easy way to get an interval workout in while out with the stroller.
  • Charity Miles– Turn this app on every time you go for a walk or a run. It not only tracks your mileage, but it will also donate 10 cents for every mile walked and 25 cents for every mile ran to a charity of your choice.

All these apps and fitness trackers are missing one thing, though. We need an app for moms and dads who are working out with kids. This way we have an app that has the ability to add certain outside factors like pushing a stroller with a 30-pound child in it, the stress of having a screaming child while you’re working out, or the panic that sets in when you realize that you lost your child’s favorite blanket on a trail run. That has to add at least like 1,000 calories burned to each workout, right?
