  1. The only problem I have with this is the current economy makes most of this either unaffordable or guilt inducing. Our last child was born while we were on a 20 acre organic free range poultry farm with no electricity and no running water. Not ideal for everyone, but helped us put our priorities in order. 100% organic cotton towels are definitely a main stay, we preferred investing in beach size

  2. Baby shampoos, wipe juices or moisture lotions are totally useless! All baby needs for skincare is some good quality edible oil and that’s it. It will take long time until they need any shampoo…
I also never understood the need for breastfeeding pillow. What’s wrong with a normal pillow?

  3. If I had to pick one thing that I couldn’t live without for my next child, it would be soothies gel pads for sore nipples. I wore these any time I wasn’t breastfeeding or showering for about the first 10 days after my daughter was born. While I did get a little sore, I never had any cracks or bleeding. They are so much more effective than lanolin and let moms get past the uncomfortable part of breastfeeding quicker

  4. I gave birth to my girls overseas where not a single one of those things was available, and we were limited to 40lbs of luggage on visits “home”, so I quickly learned what was actually “necessary” for me…pretty much only:
1.prefold diapers (my youngest has been using the toilet independently for almost 2 years now and I’m still finding great uses for those things, plus they lasted through all 3 babies just fine) + proraps classic diaper covers and a couple of disana soakers. these, i did buy on visits back to the U.S. and carried them across the ocean. they were totally worth it. i managed to track down a pre-fold factory that would sell me ONLY 100 prefolds so that helped–funny enough, you can’t very easily buy chinese pre-folds in China.
2.lansinoh–I swear this saved my nipples and my entire breastfeeding career right out of the gate. after 36 hours at home with my first daughter i was in such intense nipple pain, and then an angel from la leche league swooped in with this stuff.
3.la leche league–if i hadn’t been a part of this group, my first steps in this parenting journey would have been much more difficult, i’m sure.
4.a stretchy wrap i made myself from a heavy t-shirt sort of knit fabric that cost about 1/100th of a pre-made wrap. the ones you buy can work for some and not for others, and it’s an expensive sort of trial-and-error–it’s cheaper to get a pattern and try it out for yourself, and requires minimal sewing skills.
5.hand-me-downs and thrift-store clothes: i have only gone shopping for my 3 girls a total of 5 times, because the rain of used clothes passed on by friends and relatives is fairly constant. let

  5. I agree with those who find this list a bit pricey and unnecessary. Flat cloth diapers of good quality, even secondhand, are great and versatile, or you can use a potty cup and just potty the baby so long as you realize that even cultures that do it all the time, have a relaxed attitude about messes and mistakes. I have done both and moved back and forth to different degrees with different kids.

  6. I think the only things I had to have were a carseat, a bed rail (the one at Target, for toddlers, fits our 18 inch deep king mattress), prefolds, covers, and Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter because I’m allergic to lanolin. The allergy developed after my first was a year old. My husband was reading an article in mothering about irritants in cosmetics and lanolin was on that list. Sure enough, it was making the eczema on my nipples worse.

  7. Glad Rags overnight pads are WAY too short for me, and not thick enough to avoid accidents! The ones I make myself are roughly twice as long as theirs. I use the handful of overnight Glad Rags I wasted my money on for the last two days of my period. I can make roughly a dozen in about two hours, and spend less than the cost of one Glad Rag. To all the ladies who experience hemorrhaging during your flow, Glad Rags are not for you. All the not-organic Carter’s swaddling blankets I received as gifts now have new life as menstrual pads 😀

As a few PPs said, most of these products are not practical for lower to middle income people!

Used clothing is far more “green” than any new organic clothing. Yay thrift stores.

Cloth diapers are prohibitively expensive in areas with ridiculously high water costs. It would have cost 3x as much to clean cloth diapers, vs using disposables. Sorry, but having food on the table more important to me than cloth diapers.

The cost of these swaddling blankets and burp cloths makes my jaw hit the floor! A $1.50 made-in-USA skein of yarn is enough to make a burp cloth that will last for years as a kitchen or bath wash rag once baby outgrows burp cloths, and knitting will help with the swelling inevitable in pregnancy.

We received that Under the Nile bunny as a gift… the little one never played with it.

The nursing pillow… absolutely essential! That is the only thing on this list that I felt like I could not live without. I feel like every family’s/ new parent’s/ newborn’s needs are different, so a one-size-fits-all “must-have” list is not going to fit every parent/ baby.
