Books With Morals For Children

Naomi Aldort

Naomi, What is your opinion on choosing books with morals? We were given a few (Berestain Bears) and now my daughter acts out the "bad" characters. Is this therapy or should I have prevented it by not reading those books to her?

Dear parent,

The concepts of good and bad, right and wrong, are the invention of the human mind. They are actually the cause of the “bad” behaviors we want to avoid. I would rather teach a child that no one is bad and some people are confused and hurting and need a lot of love in order to heal and be their real loving selves again.

I recommend to avoid morals in books or otherwise. Pass on values of love, compassion, equality, respect, trust, connection etc. Growing up without our unhealthy

concepts of dividing people or events into good and bad, a child will stay more peaceful

and guided by love.

Because these concepts are not loving, they scare the child. She is all love, and the introduction of “bad” is terrifying. The way she deals with fear is to play it out. By doing so she internalizes the concept and doing her best to be good, not authentically, but in reaction to the fear of being bad and getting hurt.

Stick to books that have no duality; no categorizing of bad and good. There are some wonderful books out there that simply tell stories without labeling and scaring. A few examples are, Toby The Zebra, What Spot, Elephant on Wheels, Winnie the Pooh, The Little Prince, Slip the Otter, Harry and Shelbert etc. Enjoy.

Warmly, Naomi Aldort http://authenticparent.com
