Arms Wide Open

I went to the hospital and stayed overnight. It was a little adventure. I’ve never had to go to the hospital before (except for the day I was born). I was there for laparoscopic surgery as I continue to manage living with endometriosis.

The anesthesia made me super lovey dovey. In recovery, I sang praises to my doctor and the nurses. I remember asking one nurse to fetch my husband so I could tell him I was bursting with love for him.

Later, I ate Jell-O. Can’t tell you the last time I had that. I forgot how good it tastes.

Now I’m back home. I thought I’d be in heaven with nothing to do for the next few days but veg out. I was wrong. I’m itching to get back into my regular routine. For now, I have a stack of magazines and books to keep me occupied. One book is Arms Wide Open by Patricia Harman.

I loved her book The Blue Cotton Gown (stories about patients she meets as a nurse midwife). This is the prequel, and it’s about how she first became a home-birth midwife. It’s also about the challenges of living on a commune. Fascinating read.

Have you read any good books lately? I could use some recommendations.

I highly recommend The President's Daughter and The Road Home, both by Ellen Emerson White. Lisa Lut'z's The Spellman Files is alsoexcellent, as is Celia Garth by Gwen Bristow.
I loved the Mommy-track Mysteries by Ayelet Waldman, they are funny and honest. She also has a collection of essays called Bad Mother, which I enjoy, but it is kind of depressing in parts. I remember when I had my laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis in my twenties. Good luck sitting up! (Who knew you used your stomach muscles for all that, right?)
Im really enjoying "Just Kids" right now, by Patti Smith. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Thanks, everyone. I'll look into these. Ashley - so true. Tried to twist open the top of a jar the other day...ow.
