Here’s the Full Scoop on Attachment Parenting Month:

The AP Month vision is to create one strong voice for Attachment Parenting through activities, events and information and to celebrate parent support. The AP Month theme and related activities are intended to encourage parents everywhere to seek out and make beneficial group support a regular feature in their busy lives.

Support is a known stress buster and while that feature alone is enough to get us looking up a group, there are so many other ways that groups can deliver benefits. Group support has been shown to promote friendship, sharing, self-esteem, self-efficacy, confidence and competence. Social support has also been shown to offer some protection against depression.

When parents engage group social support there really can be feelings of relaxation, relating, rejuvenation and renewal which in turn can lead to more effective parenting and more positive parent-child relationships. In short, families can access greater capacity to thrive. Best of all, this social support resource is renewable and the effects are renewable too.

Who: All parents, Attachment Parenting partners and like minds around the world are invited and encouraged to become and/or promote “Renewed with Parent Support” during the fifth annual Attachment Parenting Month.

Why: Group support is an overlooked but important and fun way to reduce stress, relax, relate, rejuvenate and renew on a regular basis. All parents deserve these feelings regularly and all children deserve parents who access these benefits. During AP Month, parents are challenged to re-examine their daily activities and traditions and learn new ways to engage in group support activities for regular renewal. AP Month partners will offer resources to support and sustain these efforts all year round.

It’s so much more than just stress reduction When parents engage in regular group support, priceless and precious time, attention, and felt love is being shared and experienced and provides more creativity and more relaxed parenting. Tensions can be released, softened and even dissolved. Children receive brain boosts that affect social, emotional and cognitive development.

A Powerful Message to Our Children: When parents make regular group support a priority, children learn life lessons that groups can be supportive and helpful. We model a helping community by being helpful and by seeking help and friendship as well. This may be an especially important message for children.

Through our AP Month theme this year, we aim to entice parents into groups to gain the resources that can serve in ways that may not be immediately obvious. Families can benefit from the renewal effects of support and we pass along the implicit knowledge that it is sustaining to be involved in groups and to experience interdependence versus increasing isolation as the healthy social experience it is. As society becomes increasingly dependent on technology to “connect” with each other, face-to-face group social values and skills may become assets and values we pass on to our children to greater benefits than we can even conceive now.
