Breastfeeding and Fertility

I have a 17 month old and I would like to begin trying to conceive another child. The problem is I still haven't begun menstruating again and my son continues to nurse at least three times a day and quite often at night as well. Although I enjoy breastfeeding; I am worried about when we will be able to conceive again. Do you have any suggestions about either breastfeeding, nutrition, or alternative therapies that will help me to regain my fertility? I have heard good things about acupuncture but I am not sure if it would be wise for me to "force" menstruation while breastfeeding. Also, I am wondering if I need to increase my body fat as I find that breastfeeding has really taken off the extra pounds as well as a few extra. Thank you for your advice.

Many moms need only a good 6 hour nursing-free stretch per day, for a few days or weeks, for menstruation to resume. If you aren’t getting breaks this long or longer, find busy things to do with your son that will keep his mind off of nursing for some good stretches of time. If he starts to think about it, find a quick distraction. If this doesn’t work, you could try telling him that mommy milk needs nap times, or some other kind of image that feels natural to you.

If, during these nurse-free times, you find that you’re having some milk let-down when your son cries or does something really endearing, then you aren’t giving your hormones the break they need to allow fertility to return. In this case, you’ll want to have a caretaker spend some blocks of time with your son while you go out and pamper yourself with anything that has nothing to do with babies.

Acupuncture could be helpful and would not be harmful. Fat makes estrogen and estrogen is needed for your fertility to return. You are going to need a little; you’re right about that.
