Breastfeeding Champion: Jack Newman

Jack Newman, MD, an internationally recognized breastfeeding expert, has been a mother’s milk advocate for more than 30 years. He was born in Tel Aviv in 1946 and grew up in Canada. Newman graduated from the University of Toronto medical school in 1970, interned at the Vancouver General Hospital and then worked as senior house surgeon at the Hutt Hospital in New Zealand.

In 1981, after completing his residency in Quebec City, he went to work as a pediatric specialist at the Umtata Hospital in the Transkei territory of South Africa. There he witnessed the horrors of bottle feeding first hand. The water mothers used to prepare formula was often contaminated and their babies frequently died of diarrhea.

When Newman returned to Canada in 1983, he began working in the emergency room of the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, where he saw many mothers and babies with breastfeeding problems. Moved by his experiences in the ER and in Africa, in 1984, Newman started the first breastfeeding clinic in Canada, at the Hospital for Sick Children. Currently housed at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute has assisted nearly 30,000 mothers and babies.

Newman has written several books, most recently The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers with Teresa Pitman (Crown Publishing Group, 2006)—published in Canada as Dr. Jack Newman’s Guide to Breastfeeding (Harper Collins Canada, 2005) and The Latch and Other Keys to Successful Breastfeeding also with Teresa Pitman (Hale Publishing, 2006). His video is Dr. Jack Newman’s Visual Guide to Breastfeeding.

Newman speaks frequently at conferences, especially La Leche League and International Lactation Consultant Association conferences. His slide presentation on the ubiquitous imagery of bottles in modern society and its negative influence on breastfeeding was the inspiration for the creation of the International Breastfeeding Symbol.

Newman has received the National Breastfeeding Seminar Award of Excellence (1996), Lamaze International’s Irwin Chabon Award (2001), the La Leche League International Award of Excellence (2005) and the Friend of Children Award from the Canadian Association for Young Children (2006).

Newman lives in Toronto and is the father of three adult children.
