Nursing Past One

When I was pregnant for the first time, I read everything I could about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. But I consciously shied away from reading anything about breastfeeding. I wanted to breastfeed. But I didn’t want to know about it in an intellectual way. I just wanted to do it when the time came. Perhaps I was afraid if I knew too much in advance, it would make me anxious, maybe even too anxious to nurse. Nursing at first wasn’t easy. In the hospital my nipples developed painful blisters that filled with pus and then with blood. I fretted that the baby would be... read more

Breast Milk Mom Prepares to Sue the TSA Over Detention

by Jake Aryeh Marcus Find Sustainable Mothering on Facebook and Jake on Twitter. Stacey Armato, the mother who was detained by TSA agents in Phoenix last February when she asked for “alternate” screening for her pumped breast milk, has filed a TSA Tort Claim Package, the last step before she can file a lawsuit against the government employees who she claims detained her in retaliation for filing a complaint against them. Backyard Spa Day! Sky Is The Limit...

Never To Young To Spa A group of us have been meeting at park days and taking field trips together with our kids for over two years now. Each season brings different needs from the children and different offerings from the mothers. Recently, we began a series of Momma Workshops wherein once a week, a mom from our group would bring a presentation to share with the children. One of our mothers is an aromatherapist and decided to create a Spa Day. Of course, all of the moms in the group were thrilled with this idea. Our excitment was contagious and the children eagerly... read more

Just When You Thought it Was Safe to Travel with Breast Milk: The TSA Targets Mothers

by Jake Aryeh Marcus Find Sustainable Mothering on Facebook and Jake on Twitter. When attorney Stacey Armato arrived at the TSA inspection at her usual gate at Phoenix International Airport for her weekly return flight home to Los Angeles on February 1st, she felt a bit of trepidation. The week before she had been held for 40 minutes while TSA staff researched whether she had a right to refuse to allow her pumped breast milk to be x-rayed. She had requested “alternate” screening – something to which she has been entitled since the summer of 2007 when the TSA exempted... read more

The New Bra

I have been pregnant and nursing for seven years in a row. Pregnant, nursing, pregnant, nursing, pregnant and nursing. I birthed three children in less than five years, and have nursed for over 63 months, not including the eight months of tandem nursing. Part of how I keep myself feeling like a woman, not just a nursing mother, is by wearing inspired lingerie. For the past 20 months of nursing my third baby, I skipped the nursing bra phase entirely. I preferred a gorgeous plunge bra, two in black, one in beige; but, since it wasn’t a nursing bra, the months of pulling... read more
