A Baby With A Purpose: Leone Turns Six Months Old

Leone is growing so fast that the peach fuzz on her head looks longer from one day to the next. She’s got a little bang in front now, like Tintin. And her eyelashes have grown long and unruly. But the biggest change since she turned six months old five days ago is that she suddenly has so much purpose. She knows what she wants and she tries to get it, a look of serious concentration on her face. When I have a cup filled with water and I take a sip, Leone fixates on the cup, grabs at it with both hands, and shoves it towards her mouth. She smacks... read more

Doesn't the Breast Work Anymore?

By Kittie FrantzIssue 132, September/October 2005 When I became a grandmother, I considered myself lucky. I was a practicing pediatric nurse-practitioner and teaching in a university; as new studies came along that suggested making changes in the way people parented, I could understand and accept them from a medical point of view without feeling invalidated as a mother. The trend that most disturbs me is the notion that it is unnecessary, almost wrong, to soothe your baby by breastfeeding. I am puzzled when I hear the advice to never breastfeed your baby to sleep.... read more

Overnight Diapering

Every time I try to use cloth for overnight for my 6 month old son, he gets a yeast infection rash. I use prefolds with snappies, bummies whisper wraps, and a stay-dry doubler made of fleece and terry cloth at night. I always end up putting him back in disposables at night because after about 2 nights, he ends up with a bad rash. What is a good overnight system? There are two things that come to mind when I read your question.  First, that the rash only happens at night tells me that it is possibly not yeast.  Yeast would be living in the diapers all the time and... read more

Can You Really Travel With Cloth Diapers?

It’s a given that you use spousies when you travel with a baby. That’s what we did most of the time with our older three, even though we were super duper into the whole cloth diaper thing. But why can’t you travel with cloth? Since Descartes tells us we have to examine all of our beliefs, reject our assumptions, and follow only what we can verify is certain, I’ve decided to reject the idea that you can’t travel with cloth diapers. You can. I’ve taken Leone on one long car trip — for an assignment in Gold Beach, Oregon — and traveled twice... read more

Problems with Nightime Nursing and Co-sleeping

I have been co-sleeping and nursing my son since he was born. Although there have certainly been challenges; this gentle approach has always felt right to me. However, lately I have started to question the way my husband and I are handling nighttime parenting. To start with, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get our son to sleep. I try to nurse him to sleep but it often doesn't work at night anymore. My husband will then take him and rock him while he crys. Sometimes he will fall asleep while being rocked, and other times I will take him and breastfeed him... read more

Breastfeeding and Fertility

I have a 17 month old and I would like to begin trying to conceive another child. The problem is I still haven't begun menstruating again and my son continues to nurse at least three times a day and quite often at night as well. Although I enjoy breastfeeding; I am worried about when we will be able to conceive again. Do you have any suggestions about either breastfeeding, nutrition, or alternative therapies that will help me to regain my fertility? I have heard good things about acupuncture but I am not sure if it would be wise for me to "force" menstruation while... read more

Cloth Diapering 101 or Everything You Need to Know About How to Get Started with Cloth Diapers

If you have friends who are using cloth diapers, invite yourself over for a crash course and a chat. If you’re a cloth diaper pioneer (and chances are you will be, since plastic diaper companies have been advertising and brainwashing the American public so effectively that only something like five percent of American moms and dads are using cloth these days), Internet groups, like the cloth diaper forums on Mothering.com, are a great place to go to ask questions and learn. More conventional sites (like BabyZone.com) also have good cloth diaper... read more

I Heart Cloth Diapers

I have an article about cloth diapering in this month’s Mothering magazine. It’s 5,000 words long. It’s sort of impossible to imagine how anyone could have 5,000 words to say about cloth diapering. But I did. And I actually could have written 5,000 more. I don’t even know that much about cloth diapers. I must be a cloth diaper freak or fanatic or obsessive or something. But I’m not. Well, not really. Well, okay, maybe I am. Well, okay, maybe I wasn’t before I started researching the article (which Peggy asked me to write.... read more
