Should You Let Your Baby Be Naked?

In much of Europe and Africa it’s common to see naked toddlers playing outside. Most Europeans aren’t as uptight about nakedness as we are in America. But when my almost 16-month-old started taking off her clothes at a recent playgroup, I worried what the other parents would think. Since we keep our house so cold, I’m often surprised at how comfortable Leone is in her birthday suit. The other parents didn’t flinch, even when Leone insisted on doffing the diaper. They seemed to think the baby, with her Buddha belly pooching over her legs, was as cute as... read more

The Finnish Baby Box

by Christine Gross-Loh, author of the new book Parenting Without Borders: Surprising Lessons Parents Around the World Can Teach Us   Hot Topic: Discuss Finnish Baby Boxes in the Community              I’ve long been fascinated by motherhood around the world. What is it like to birth in another country? What’s the lore on starting solids in another culture? How do children play in other countries? How do they sleep and who sleeps with them? How do cultural or societal supports ease the transition to new parenthood? My friend Michele,... read more

Cribs, Playpens, Bassinets Associated with Infant Injury, Death

Since the baby almost always sleeps with us and usually naps on the big bed, I keep wondering if we should dismantle the crib in the corner of our room. Mostly it stands empty. Sometimes I pile it with clean laundry I haven’t had a chance to fold. We bought the crib eleven years ago when Hesperus was just a few days old. Still sore from a difficult birth, I tottered into a baby superstore in Atlanta, Georgia, with my husband and best friend Sue flanking me. Sue carried the baby. Hesperus was a flail-y sleeper. Even as a newborn, Hesperus rarely fell... read more

Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum Nurse-In Draws Large Crowd

February 21, 2011By Jessica Claire Haney On Saturday, February 12, an estimated 150 nursing mothers and their supporters came together for a two-hour nurse-in at the Hirshhorn Museum, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Organized by LJ Fletcher Pelham in response to an experience her friend had at the museum. The event celebrated women’s rights to breastfeed in public with a positive spirit of community. On January 30, Norika Aita was nursing her 11-month-old daughter, Elaine, on a bench near an escalator in the museum when a security guard told... read more

Things I Wish I Had Known About Cloth Diapers

When I first started cloth diapering I had a pretty sizable stash of Fuzzi Bunz one size pocket diapers. Most had suggested 12-18 for starting out, but we ended up with 22 by chance. This brings me to item one that I wish I had known:   1) Start out with more than you think you need. I recommend this, because we went through, and still go through, a lot of diapers. As a new mother, I was thankful to have the extra diapers so that laundry could be spread out to every 2 or 3 days, rather than every day.    2) A good drying rack or two will be cheaper and serve... read more
