Breastfeeding legal rights

Last night, I took my 4 year old son to the emergency room at Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo, NY. I was breastfeeding my 2 week old newborn while registering my son, when the woman at the desk in the ER asked me if she could get me a blanket to cover up. I told her no thanks, I am comfortable and I have a blanket for my baby already and she's comfortable. She continued on, saying (and I'm paraphrasing), no, I mean to cover up while you're doing that. I said no, I am not uncomfortable nursing in public. She continued on, being quite pushy, saying that "it... read more

Cloth Diaper Party Like a Rock Star!

Moms have forever been getting the spiel to host and give Mary Kay parties, Tupperware parties, and (lately) even sex toy parties. I recently found out about a new way to make money having a party…and I have a feeling it’s going to be a hit, given the level of passion women I know in life and through this blog have about the coolness of cloth diapers. Cloth diaper parties. Explain, Lucy… I am going to pull in the press release here, because it’s written quite well and y’all don’t need me to sit here and reword it when I could spend that time setting up... read more

This Squirming, Kicking, Kvetching, Smiling Baby is Driving me Crazy!

At almost eight and a half months old, Leone is all squirming all the time. Holding her when she’s trying to get somewhere (which is almost always) is like wrestling an octopus underwater with olive oil on your hands. A lot of babies her age have been crawling for months. Not Leone. But in the last few days she’s almost managed to heave her heavy self forward in a crawl-like manner. When you plop her down with some toys she doesn’t stay still. She rotates. Or scoots. Or twists. Or does something. This invariably moves her towards the only... read more

Ban the Bags

By Marsha Walker The birth of a baby is a joyous event that everyone loves to celebrate with a gift. However, some gifts come with strings attached. Visits to the obstetrician yield a changing pad wrapped around a can of formula. Boxes and cases of formula arrive on the doorstep. Hospitals present new mothers with gift bags containing formula, while pediatricians' offices give new mothers a kit containing more formula, with instructions on how to use it to supplement a breastfed baby. Which of the above "gifts" has been shown to be such an effective marketing tactic... read more

The Baby is Eight Months Old

Hesperus and her friend Gabby gearing to do back handsprings in the July 4th parade My dad always says that “a day that you exercise in the morning is a day that you exercise.” So when the baby, who slept badly last night because she had a fever, woke up at six a.m. I decided to take her running. I look like I’m walking in slow motion when I’m running. I’m so slow that overweight men on benches laugh at me and say, “Can you turn up the speed volume?” when I “run” by. But, true to my motto that anything worth doing is worth doing... read more

Breastfeeding and Tooth Decay

I have been blissfully co-sleeping and nursing my 23 month old daughter and had every intention of continueing to let her guide the weaning process. She has cavities and is going to require to be under general anaesthetic to have fillings. The dentists are saying that it is because I nurse her throughout the night. The thought of telling her she may not nurse fills me with dread - it just feels so cruel. I am wondering what you suggest about 1) When she goes under the anaesthetic she cant eat the night before - how can I get through the night with no breastfeeding?... read more

Insufficient Supply of Breastmilk

Should I be concerned about not having enough breastmilk to nourish my baby? Many mothers are concerned about not having enough milk. Yet the likelihood that a woman will be physically unable to produce sufficient milk for her nursling is actually low. So why is this such a common concern? Part of the answer lies in our loss of the art of breastfeeding. Many mothers have grown up in families where they are the first women in generations to breastfeed. These mothers are pioneers, doing the best they can with the information and support available to them. Unfortunately,... read more

Improper Latch

After enjoying delightfully successful breastfeeding relationships with my first two children, I am having an issue with my third. He is 13-months old-and has four teeth on top. While he never noticeably bites me during breastfeeding, I have to assume that his teeth are pressing or gouging into my flesh. I have developed wounds on both sides in the spots where his two top teeth touch me when we nurse in our usual cradle position, and sore, red spots from nursing in other positions. His teeth are hitting a millimeter out from where my nipple meets the areola. I thought... read more

Real Men Wear Skirts, Change Diapers, Don't Smoke?

From the blog Sociological Images: "Reflecting the expectation that it is women who will do the majority of the child care, men’s bathrooms frequently do not have baby changing tables. This particular bathroom at the Baltimore airport, however, is an exception. Notice anything odd?" (Hint: look at the bottom.) read more
