Tongue And Lip Tie Faq

There seems to be a lot of tongue and lip tie problems (ankyloglossia) going on lately, so I thought I would try to make an FAQ about it. I will ask it to be stickied, or bump it occasionally. I don’t know much about this topic, so everyone who does please add to this. Thanks . Kellymom’s always a good place to start: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns...tonguetie.html MarcyC found a good resource describing various types of tongue and lip (labial) tie here. It's written by Elizabeth Coryllos, the guru of tongue... read more

Things I Wish I Had Known About Cloth Diapers

When I first started cloth diapering I had a pretty sizable stash of Fuzzi Bunz one size pocket diapers. Most had suggested 12-18 for starting out, but we ended up with 22 by chance. This brings me to item one that I wish I had known:   1) Start out with more than you think you need. I recommend this, because we went through, and still go through, a lot of diapers. As a new mother, I was thankful to have the extra diapers so that laundry could be spread out to every 2 or 3 days, rather than every day.    2) A good drying rack or two will be cheaper and serve... read more

Growing Up Together

Today was my eldest child’s last day of kindergarten. The school year has been dragging limply and weakly along, nudging itself just far enough with the help of Field Day, parties, and movies to make up for those long-ago January snow days. My five year old is totally schooled out. She could use a long stretch with no rigid schedules, no behavioral modifications via color-coded chart, and no dress code. A month of Sundays is what she needs, lolling upside down on the couch in her underwear, reading the comics. So yes. We were all ready for school to be over. But I was... read more

Sharing Grief with Children

When I woke up that first morning in the rented house that we were sharing with friends in Vermont, all was quiet. The birds outside were singing like crazy, but I heard nary a peep from the humans inside. Even my son, then a tiny, early-rising babe, was sound asleep. But somehow I knew my three year old daughter was wide awake on the other side of our bedroom wall; maybe something about the way the sheets were rustling gave her away. Without thinking much about it, I crept out of my bed, slipped through the open door into her room, and climbed into the twin bed next to... read more
