West Virginia's Pending Breastfeeding Bills: I Have Good News and I Have Bad News

by Jake Aryeh Marcus Find Sustainable Mothering on Facebook and Jake on Twitter. West Virginia is one of only three U.S. states (along with Nebraska and Idaho) that has no law whatsoever protecting breastfeeding. So I was glad to read that this month not one but two bills were introduced in the West Virginia Senate concerning breastfeeding. Unfortunately, one of the bills could result in a law that helps breastfeeding mothers and the other … well, not so much. West Virginia Senate Bill Number 80 adds “currently breast feeding mother” to the list of people disqualified... read more

Being A Mother Is Like.....

(This was written at my blog around Mother’s Day of this year, but I find that it is relevant year round!) You can find Kris on Twitter, Facebook and writing occasionally at her blog. Being a mother is like being caught in a recurring thunderstorm. Things are going smoothly, things are organized, clean and people are well-rested and fed. Then, you see the storm coming-the clouds rolling in, lightning in the distance, a low rumble of thunder. People are getting tired and cranky, hungry- you see the storm coming. There’s a clap of thunder and the rain starts pouring... read more

Things We Keep Hidden

I came across this book by accident about a year ago, and found it for $5. Quite a bit of luck since this book retails for $50 or more. Flipping through it, I’ve seen quite a different version of Sylvia Plath-that of an extremely talented artist. Not at all the version that has been pounded out in literary culture: that of a near-mythical, tragic poet who wrote furious poetry and, eventually, stuck her head in the oven when life became too much to bear. However, within the last ten years or so, there have been several books delving into Plath’s life, attempting to debunk... read more

Weaning Early

Is it ok to wean a little early to goats milk? or maybe even organic cow's milk? I am 4 months pregnant and have a 9 month old. I make all of his baby food and I make sure he is hitting all of his nutritional 'marks' every day. I really just want to skip the formula all together. I guess it's just the word 'FORMULA" that sounds completely unnatural to me.Since your child is doing well on solids and you are providing such great baby food for him, the answer is yes, he'll do just fine if needing to wean prematurely. I do recommend formula in some such cases, when the... read more

Nursing to Sleep

I have nursed my son to sleep since we brought him home from the hospital. He was a three month early preemie. He is now 20 months. The last three-four weeks he just won't fall asleep routinely to nursing anymore. We spend time nursing, he ALMOST falls asleep and then wakes up and wants to roam the bed and find a comfy spot which instead just wakes him up more. I've tried just holding him down but we go through 20-120 minutes of crying and kicking and screaming, and then finally nursing for a few minutes to fall asleep. With naptime, he may fall asleep right away, but... read more

Breastfeeding VS. Sears

I’m not sure why it took me so long to get good photos done of my son & myself but he will be 3 in May & I finally got some beautiful pictures taken just before Christmas this year.  I never did professional photos when he was born; I was too busy bucking mainstream mom stuff I suppose, but now I wish I had.  My mom gave me a gift card to a Sears Portrait Studio last Christmas & I was excited to get some good pictures of my son; I gave him his first legit haircut recently & he has gotten taller so he is looking very much like a child instead of a baby these days–a... read more

Stacey Armato Responds To The TSA Post On Her Breast Milk Detention

by Jake Aryeh Marcus Find Sustainable Mothering on Facebook and Jake on Twitter. Stacey Armato, the mom who was detained by the TSA when she requested that her pumped breast milk be given an “alternate” screening, agreed to an interview with me to answer some questions that might be lingering since the TSA posted its statement on her case. Q. In any earlier interview you said you hadn’t received an apology from the TSA but the TSA claims you accepted an apology from it. Did you receive an apology from the TSA?   A. In March of this year, TSA sent me a statement.  It... read more
