Cloth Diaper Matchmaker for Mamas in Need?

Dear Mamas, Please tell me what you think of this idea. In the course of reading comments I have been very touched by hearing from women who want to cloth diaper but are really low on funds and can’t afford to get that stash together. If you have some cloth diapers that your baby has grown out of, would you be interested in being matched up with a cloth diapering-wannabe mama who is in need of receiving some? I’d be willing to put you in touch with each other. Let me know. UPDATE: What a great response! So far I’ve matched up 27 mamas in need... read more

Breastfeeding. A Family Affair?

  • by admin

It’s holiday time, and you know what that means. Festive family get-togethers will abound in households all across the country, and at these get-togethers nursing mothers will inevitably breastfeed their little ones. Some will breastfeed freely and boldly in the open and other mothers will breastfeed in secret, relegated to a back bedroom. A quick jaunt around mommy message boards and mom blogs will unearth unfortunate stories of mothers who complain about feeling too uncomfortable to breastfeed even around their friends and family. Some mothers’ parents,... read more

Backyard Spa Day! Sky Is The Limit...

Never To Young To Spa A group of us have been meeting at park days and taking field trips together with our kids for over two years now. Each season brings different needs from the children and different offerings from the mothers. Recently, we began a series of Momma Workshops wherein once a week, a mom from our group would bring a presentation to share with the children. One of our mothers is an aromatherapist and decided to create a Spa Day. Of course, all of the moms in the group were thrilled with this idea. Our excitment was contagious and the children eagerly... read more

Breastfeeding Revisited

I was ushered into the natural parenting lifestyle– with all its different names & notions– gradually during my pregnancy but very suddenly after my son was born.  I became a single mother with a host of lofty ideals.  During my pregnancy I read many books, learning about eco-friendly ways to add another human to the earth, learning to question vaccines & disposable diapers, & I gathered enough facts about breastfeeding to inform the most uninformed & arm myself against the strongest critics.  As can be expected, in hindsight, it is all conjecture until the little one is... read more

Bamboobies Cloth Nursing Pads Giveaway!

“Like a cashmere sweater for my boobies.” Best. Testimonial. Ever. I think I might need to rename September “The Month of Awesome, Green Mama Businesses.” Bamboobies, cloth nursing pads, were created by a mother of two in Boulder and are handmade in Colorado of organic and sustainable fabrics. Exasperated with disposable nursing pads, Kerry Gilmartin had a “make do” moment” that turned into a thriving home business. She shares: “After breastfeeding for a few months, I was still leaking sometimes… I even leaked through the thick washable... read more

7 Things I Don't Understand, by Leone, age 10 months

I may look little but I wrote this post. Ask my mom if you don't believe me! 1) Why, no matter how hard I tug, I can’t get the pretty soft stuff off Big Brother’s head. 2) Why, when I’m taking a bath and playing with toys and drinking some nice warm soapy delicious water, Mommy says “Yuck! Don’t do that!” and takes the cup away. 3) Why Daddy doesn’t like it when I suck on small rocks. 4) Why Big Sister #2 and Big Brother scream when I crawl over to play Legos with them. 5) Why no one wants to play with me in the middle of the... read more

Fatherhood and economic realities

I turned my blog entry here into an op-ed for the British Guardian newspaper, on how the recession could affect fathers and fatherhood. Many of the comments are interestingly hostile, resisting the idea that fathers can or should be anything but breadwinners. A friend of mine observed "that the negative commenters' real problem is with the economic realities that make a single-income household economically precarious, rather than with a dad staying home after, say, being laid off. But somehow it's easier to object to a social more than an economic one. i.e. easier to... read more
