FDA Bans BPA from Bottles and Sippy Cups

The New York Times reported today that the FDA has banned bisphenol A, otherwise known as BPA, from infant bottles and sippy cups–despite its reluctance to admit to any safety hazards associated with the chemical. Manufacturers have already stopped using the chemical in baby bottles and sippy cups, and the F.D.A. said that its decision was a response to a request by the American Chemistry Council, the chemical industry’s main trade association, that rules allowing BPA in those products be phased out, in part to boost consumer confidence. But the... read more

What your baby needs most

Before I gave birth to my first baby I was overwhelmed by the various babycare products I thought I would need.  A crib or cot, a moses basket or bassinette– what’s the difference?  Why would a baby need so many different places to sleep (in the end, my baby’s bassinette became our laundry basket!)?  Bouncy chairs, fancy applique bedding, matching curtains and trash cans, pumps, sterilizers, blankets, blankets and more blankets…  Looking at babycare catalogues boggled my mind as I tried to piece together a list of what we would really need for our little... read more

Cribs, Playpens, Bassinets Associated with Infant Injury, Death

Since the baby almost always sleeps with us and usually naps on the big bed, I keep wondering if we should dismantle the crib in the corner of our room. Mostly it stands empty. Sometimes I pile it with clean laundry I haven’t had a chance to fold. We bought the crib eleven years ago when Hesperus was just a few days old. Still sore from a difficult birth, I tottered into a baby superstore in Atlanta, Georgia, with my husband and best friend Sue flanking me. Sue carried the baby. Hesperus was a flail-y sleeper. Even as a newborn, Hesperus rarely fell... read more

My high school pal is having a baby! And he had a question.

  • by AdinaL administrator

I am so happy when people take advantage of the fact that they know a Mothering editor. Pepper me with questions, y’all! And I am always happy to get even more advice and suggestions for the Q-ers in the form of comments. Spencer went to high school with me, and had really great cast parties after our school plays. As a contextual element, I have included my high school senior portrait. Here goes: Hi Candace, My how time flies, how are you and your kids? Molly and I are expecting our first in early April. Needless to say we are really... read more

Dumb Baby Inventions of the 20th Century

  • by AdinaL administrator

I'm taking care of a sick little boy today (and possibly tomorrow as well) and so I need to delay my next installment of "25 Ways for Dads to Change the World." In the meantime, I thought I'd share some baby-related highlights from Life magazine's "30 Dumb Inventions List." First up, we have a baby cage from 1937. "The cages were distributed to members of the Chelsea Baby Club in London who have no gardens, or qualms about putting a child in a box dangling over a busy street," notes Life. My wife, incidentally, didn't think this invention was dumb at all--"It's... read more
