"The Business of Baby" - A Review

I promised Jennifer Margulis  (author of The Business of Baby-What Doctors Don't Tell You, What Corporations Try to Sell You, and How to Put Your Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Baby Before Their Bottom Line) a book review quite some time ago.  I finally am finding time to write this and in my preparations I have been perusing her negative criticisms on Amazon.     I don’t really love negative comments about anybody, even people I don’t like, but I did find these interesting.  Having just gone over the book, I was a little surprised to see what they said. It seemed to me... read more

Trying Out the New Boppy Baby Chair

Our partnership with The Boppy Company - who we also worked together with last year to review their new Two-Sided Nursing Pillow - brought together seven Mavens with babies between who all had the opportunity to try out the new Boppy Baby Chair.  We asked the Mavens all about the Boppy Baby Chair - what they liked and didn’t like about it, how it compared to other chairs they used, and whether or not they found it useful.  6 of the 7 testers said they would “Absolutely” or “Probably” recommend the Boppy Chair to another mom with a baby older than 4 months.  And, for... read more

Trying Out the New Ergobaby Swaddler

Sleep.  Every newborn needs it, and new moms don’t seem to be getting enough of it.  Skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding and babywearing are a huge part of calming, bonding and closeness in the early days with a new baby, and swaddling is another way to calm babies, which might help new parents catch a few extra Z’s.   Ergobaby has long been a favorite babywearing brand among Mothering moms, and this week they’re launching an exciting new product to help make correct swaddling easier - the Ergobaby Swaddler.  The key to swaddling is for it to be tight around... read more

For New Mothers: The Dishes Will Get Done... Eventually

By Sheryl Paul              There's so much we don't tell new mothers. As with all transitions, our culture presents a skewed image of motherhood which falls into two diametrically opposed categories. On the one hand, we expect motherhood to be a Huggies commercial where mother, father, and baby are swathed in a pastel, diffused light, blissfully enjoying their transition without a blemish or challenge to be found. On the other hand, our culture presents an image of endless martyrdom and meaningless sacrifice where new mothers lose all of their independence... read more

FDA Bans BPA from Bottles and Sippy Cups

The New York Times reported today that the FDA has banned bisphenol A, otherwise known as BPA, from infant bottles and sippy cups–despite its reluctance to admit to any safety hazards associated with the chemical. Manufacturers have already stopped using the chemical in baby bottles and sippy cups, and the F.D.A. said that its decision was a response to a request by the American Chemistry Council, the chemical industry’s main trade association, that rules allowing BPA in those products be phased out, in part to boost consumer confidence. But the... read more

What your baby needs most

Before I gave birth to my first baby I was overwhelmed by the various babycare products I thought I would need.  A crib or cot, a moses basket or bassinette– what’s the difference?  Why would a baby need so many different places to sleep (in the end, my baby’s bassinette became our laundry basket!)?  Bouncy chairs, fancy applique bedding, matching curtains and trash cans, pumps, sterilizers, blankets, blankets and more blankets…  Looking at babycare catalogues boggled my mind as I tried to piece together a list of what we would really need for our little... read more
