Protect Your Uncircumcised Son: Expert Medical Advice for Parents

By Paul M. Fleiss  Increasing numbers of American parents today are protecting their sons from routine circumcision at birth, but as their boys grow up, they often find themselves at odds with doctors who cling to old-fashioned opinions and hospital routines.  I often receive calls from distraught parents who say that a doctor insists that their little boy needs to be circumcised because there is something wrong. When they bring their son into my office, I almost always find that there's nothing wrong with the child's penis. Occasionally there's a slight... read more

More on the Newborn who was Circumcised Against his Parents’ Will

There are over 5,659 comments on an article in today’s Huffington Post about San Francisco’s proposed ban on infant circumcision, which could appear on the ballot next November. I recently spoke at length with Spencer Aronfeld, the Coral Gables-based Florida lawyer representing Vera Delgado to seek retribution from South Miami Hospital, owned by Baptist Health. Three months ago, in August 2010, South Miami Hospital circumcised her infant son, Mario Viera, without parental consent. No men in Delgado’s family are circumcised. Mario’s father isn’t... read more

A Newborn in the Hospital Circumcised Without his Parents' Consent

After reading this article in the Miami Herald, “Accidental circumcision leads to lawsuit, protest,” I feel sick. The article details how an 8-day-old baby, who was staying in the intensive care unit of South Miami Hospital, was circumcised without his parents’ consent. They did not want him circumcised. They did not sign a consent form. No doctor or nurse asked the parents before doing the procedure. How could this have happened? It’s so disturbing and unbelievable that a doctor would cut off part of a tiny baby’s body without... read more

To Not Circumcise or to Not Circumcise; There is No Question.

In the world of natural parenting, we are often blessed with the sciences to prove that certain stances we take are adhered to for the long-lasting benefit of our children.  For instance, no matter how many “experts” have written books claiming that cry-it-out methods work & are harmless, we know that the opposite is true: these methods often fail & are harmful.  Still, parents make choices.  To bed-share, room-share, or not?  To employ the use of “time-outs” or find another, more communicative way?  To vaccinate, delayed-vaccinate, or not?  While I do... read more

Should We "Nick" Our Baby Girls?

I had a boyfriend in college who was from Eritrea and had fought in the war of independence from Ethiopia. He fought side by side with women soldiers, some of whom had had their clitorises cut off when they were small children. “What does it feel like?” He asked his fellow soldiers. The women laughed at him. “How should we know?” They said. “We’ve never known anything different!” Clitoridectomy, known in the Western world as female genital mutilation (FGM) is no laughing matter. According to the World Health Organization, between 100 and... read more
