Easter Herb Garden How-To and Herb Quiche Recipe

This accidental idea came to me when I went to Trader Joe’s to buy some flowers for a friend last Easter.  I already had the herb quiche in the car and stopped by the store on my way.  I kept looking for some spring flowers, but mostly there were expensive Easter lilies and orchids left in the flower section.  All of a sudden the herbs got my attention.  I thought for less than the price of the lilies I could buy at least 6 different herbs and a beautiful square basket to put them in.  She could use the herbs for a long time and reuse the basket too.  I was... read more

Encouraging The Mother Daughter Project

When I was 19, I went to Europe with 2 girlfriends for 9 1/2 weeks. On the train in France, I was listening to Sinead O’Connor for the first time on my walkman (yes, I am that old) and I was deeply moved by just how incredible she was. Everyone had told me she was amazing, but I hadn’t checked her out yet because I thought if she was that great, I would have discovered her myself. I had a similar experience with The Mother Daughter Project. My friend eagerly told me about the book by SuEllen Hamkins, MD and Renee Schultz, MA. The movement had been a... read more

A photo a day

This past month, I participated in a challenge issued by an Australian blogger, Chantelle at fatmumslim. She provided a list of prompts – one for each day of the month — and asked all participants to share a photo each day based on the prompts. The idea of taking a photo every day isn’t new, but Chantelle’s colorful, lovely list caught on like wildfire. Over 800,000 images were shared during the month of February as part of #FebPhotoADay. I loved doing this, and I didn’t miss a day. You can see all 29 of my photos on this Pinterest board. Today... read more

A Book Review Series In Honor of African-American History Month

By Jessica Williams Most people know about Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” Toni Morrison’s “Song of Solomon,” Alice Walker’s “In Search of our Mother’s Gardens,” and Wallace Thurman’s, “The Blacker the Berry,” all of which I whole-heartedly recommend. My husband was born of a black father and white mother. When I birthed our first daughter I was obsessed with reading about mixed race children. Here are a few reviews of some lesser known gems centered on being black and white. Caucasia by Danzy Senna This book is... read more

Child-made Valentine’s Day Card Display

by Lynn Colwell & Corey Colwell-Lipson What to do with the Valentine’s Day cards and gifts your child makes at home or brings home from school? Stick ‘em in a drawer? Seal ‘em in a box? Instead, how about turning them into Valentine’s Day decor? (Items saved from previous years may be used as well.) In my house, we used an empty mantle and a bare stick-wreath as the “blank canvas”. My daughter, Zoe, was allowed to decorate the area as she pleased. She had fun with the process and, in the end, was so proud of the display and the seasonal mood it... read more
