The Season of Wonder

brought to us by Mothering sponsor Oak Meadow     Becoming attuned to Earth’s cycles can enhance our lives while contributing to a healthier lifestyle, community, and world. From the time our children are very little, we can share with them our appreciation and delight of the great outdoors, and encourage a growing awareness of nature and all its wonders.   This time of year feels like a celebration as the Earth revives after a winter sleep. Visiting your favorite “sit spot” with your children is a wonderful way to revel in the changes of... read more

Power to the Peaceful

Mother's Day as a celebration of the unique power mothers have to be peacemakers.    By V.K. Harber   As Mother’s Day approaches in the US and retailers ready their supply of flowers, candy, jewelry, and spa packages, I find myself torn, as I always am, between supporting the spoiling of mothers and highlighting the fact that, like so many holidays, Mother’s Day has drifted pretty far form it’s original intent.   Undoubtedly, mothers everywhere deserve some pampering. A little extra sleep, some alone time, a special meal, and some adorable kid crafts... read more

Abiie Babydeck Stroller Revolutionizing Convenience For Parents

  • by AdinaL administrator

From now on, parents can stop searching for diaper changing stations or settling for unhygienic restroom conditions. Finding a place to change a baby’s diaper has always been a problem. A dad in New York ended up creating a website for locating all restrooms equipped with changing station (www.daddytypes.com/nyc_mens_room_changing_tables/). This enthusiastic parent’s survey found that many well-known restaurants and cafes, such as Starbucks, were not equipped with changing stations.  Many public restrooms do not have changing stations, forcing parents to change... read more

September! New month, new season, new issue on the stands—this one making Mothering history. Our first cover featuring an interracial couple! I don’t anticipate any raised eyebrows, since we are all, ostensibly, comfortably at home now in the 21st century. (But, then again, I was not expecting it when our last issue featuring a breastfeeding cover, July-August 2006, got pulled from newsstands around the country. Apparently just too indecent. . . The story behind our new cover is a moving one. The cover couple, Kathy and Gerry Swan, lost their first child... read more

how to make a mouse wave

  • by AdinaL administrator

One of the more entertaining challenges before us with the toy issue: getting mice to raise their paws in greeting. Staff photographer Melyssa Holik rose to the occasion with grace. (For the record, mice are actually quite happy to wave if you give them a little support of the paperclip variety.) # # # # # Tags: melyssa holik, mice, paperclip, toy issue, toys, wave This entry was posted on Monday, September 22nd, 2008 at 6:15 pm and is filed under backstory, photography. Energy is funny. Just when I think I don’t have any, some comes rushing in and I accomplish things I’d given up on doing on my own.  Yesterday, H. had her first field trip…the class went hiking, collected falling leaves, sketched them. It was an impromptu field trip, which meant that I had to run around wrangling a bunch of different things in under 24 hours. Lace-up shoes (not the sturdy mary janes we had on hand). A small, unlined notebook. A light jacket. A sun hat. A small day pack. Sunblock. I did have the weirder stuff–the notebook, as H. got 2... read more
