  • by admin

Review: Book By Book Summary: Mothers and daughters share a special bond…why not further this bond through reading together? Book clubs have been growing in popularity over the past ten years, started by a variety of people with various interests and goals. Mother-daughter book clubs offer a great way for families to grow and share—with each other and with other mother-daughter pairs. "Together We Are Strong!"

I want to let you know about a Haba game, Castle Knights, that my family is loving these days. Unlike games that pit children against each other (not that I think Candyland and Chutes and Ladders are Machiavellian, but sometimes one of my kids has a really hard time not winning and it takes the fun out of the whole thing), Castle Knights is cooperative. It also consists of a really cool 3-dimensional world made out of delightfully illustrated cardboard and wooden blocks. Pull a card–it tells you which blocks you need to build a particular tower. Together, you have... read more

Third Way for Dads to Change the World: Read Children’s Books with Caregiving Dads

By Jeremy Adam Smith It's an empirical fact that fathers are comparatively rare in children's books — when economist David A. Anderson and psychologist Mykol Hamilton studied 200 children's books in 2005, they found that fathers appeared about half as often as mothers. Mothers were ten times more likely to be depicted taking care of babies than fathers and twice as likely to be seen nurturing older children. No surprise there, of course. Moms are still the ones most likely to be taking care of kids. But where does that leave families who don't fit the traditional... read more

Video of the Amazing Banana Opening Trick

Several readers wrote to me privately about the banana trick I described last week and a few commented on the post saying they needed a video demonstration. Ask and ye shall receive! Here is 10-year-old Hesperus demonstrating the amazing banana opening trick. I am narrating and holding the camera (James’s iPhone) in one hand and Leone, who was squirming wildly, in the other. (The key is to make the slit in the banana without your kids seeing so they think you’re just opening it by magic.) Happy watching (the video is 33 seconds... read more

The Amazing Banana Opening Trick

With your thumbnail make a gash in the top inside of the banana right below the stem. Do this surreptitiously when you’re kids aren’t looking. Then hold the banana upside down by the stem with the gash side facing you. Say, “I AM MORE MAGICAL THAN THE AMAZING RANDY. I AM MORE DARING THAN EVEL KNIEVEL. I CAN OPEN THIS BANANA USING MY MAGICAL POWERS. ARE YOU READY?” (Since kids will figure out the trick pretty quickly, you’ve got to milk it for all it’s worth the first time you do it.) Flick your wrist so you are flicking the banana down and... read more

paper dolls!

Back in October, I mentioned a new feature that we were going to be including in our November–December issue, but I neglected to follow up on it. So here’s the scoop: paper dolls. Originally created by our very own Melyssa Holik as a Christmas present for Mothering publisher-editor Peggy O’Mara—who liked them so much she suggested we put them in the magazine as a holiday gift for our readers. And here is where you can download PDFs of four different dolls and their wardrobes—for hours and hours of good old-fashioned paper doll play.... read more

Valentine Craft Ideas

So I was wandering around the arts and crafts store yesterday, trying to come up with a valentine craft for Honoree, my second grader. Last year, I thought we were pretty darn fancy with our valentines made out of paper doilies. Each kid got a wee heart-shaped eraser, too. But H. came home with an assortment of valentines and a bit of a long face. There was the felted valentine, the quilted valentine, the knitted valentine, the fired-ceramic valentine. I may be exaggerating a little bit, but…you get the picture. Normally I would say, “Hey, kid, we’re not getting... read more
