Valentine Craft Ideas

So I was wandering around the arts and crafts store yesterday, trying to come up with a valentine craft for Honoree, my second grader. Last year, I thought we were pretty darn fancy with our valentines made out of paper doilies. Each kid got a wee heart-shaped eraser, too. But H. came home with an assortment of valentines and a bit of a long face. There was the felted valentine, the quilted valentine, the knitted valentine, the fired-ceramic valentine. I may be exaggerating a little bit, but…you get the picture. Normally I would say, “Hey, kid, we’re not getting... read more

Beware of The Pregnant Jail Breaker

About 15 minutes before the Halloween parade, we still didn’t have our costumes ready. Since my due date (more on how that’s a misnomer in a later post) was BEFORE Halloween, I wasn’t expecting to even be in the parade this year, let alone in a costume. James had the idea that we should paint my belly into a big yellow Pac Man and put dots all over black clothes but 1) we didn’t have any yellow face paint and 2) we were out of time. So I went in my friend Anjie’s escaped convict costume instead. “I don’t like it,” my 10-year-old daughter Hesperus... read more

Shifting Gift-Giving From Money to Meaning

aussiegall Flickr photostream CC by 2.0 Frenzied sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become holiday shopping traditions. Both are about grabbing up deals before someone else gets them. Not much about the spirit of giving. Not fun either. There are alternatives. They offer the satisfaction of exchanging wonderful presents while also shifting holiday gift-giving in a positive direction. Here’s how.   Enjoy tradition or create new ones. Some families choose to generate their own traditions that have little emphasis on gifts but are... read more

The Amazing Banana Opening Trick

With your thumbnail make a gash in the top inside of the banana right below the stem. Do this surreptitiously when you’re kids aren’t looking. Then hold the banana upside down by the stem with the gash side facing you. Say, “I AM MORE MAGICAL THAN THE AMAZING RANDY. I AM MORE DARING THAN EVEL KNIEVEL. I CAN OPEN THIS BANANA USING MY MAGICAL POWERS. ARE YOU READY?” (Since kids will figure out the trick pretty quickly, you’ve got to milk it for all it’s worth the first time you do it.) Flick your wrist so you are flicking the banana down and... read more
