Vacation On and Off The Beaten Path

As far as educational vacations go, it’s tough to beat Washington, DC. We’re lucky enough to live within an easy day’s drive, so we loaded up with roughly half of everything we own, booked a hotel room and hit the road, smugly patting ourselves on the back for bringing school lessons to life as well as being all around swell parents.   And there in the heart of it all: monuments and memorials, The Reflecting Pool, museums, this fancy building that looked important... Look I’m not a tour guide. But it was impressive. The kids looked around, shrugged and, in a... read more

Where Do You Stand on Kids Peeing into the Lake?

By Brian Leaf              Hello, Mothering.com readers,   I need your opinion. Where do we as liberal, holistic, natural parents stand on the issue of kids peeing into the local swimming hole?   Here’s my particular situation. Last week I was with my two boys, ages three and seven, at a lake just outside town. It was a bit early in the season, so only one other family was there.   Towards the end of our visit, my seven year old had to pee. I didn’t want to schlep up to the bathrooms, especially because I suspected we would find them locked, and if... read more

Museum Day Live!

On Sept 29th hundreds of museums across the US will provide free admission as part of Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day Live! event. Only two members per household can gain free admission during the event, and must present a special ticket to do so, but it is a good chance to reduce the costs of visiting a local museum you have been wanting to bring the family to.   In the spirit of Smithsonian Museums, who offer free admission everyday, Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the... read more

Why I Travel with My Child Too Young To Remember the Trip

Hiking to Minihaha Falls, near Lake Labun, Georgia. Why travel with a baby, many ask. Too young to remember the trip and necessitating a host of adjustments to an adult itinerary; the work required to take them along will outweigh the benefits. So, at least, goes the travel advice on many of the websites I consulted before embarking on our journey. Many of those sites went on to recommend waiting to travel internationally until children are older and can “benefit” from the trip. Some suggest leaving young children and babies with relatives and... read more

Containing Fear: A Father Weighs In

By Jessica Williams, www.LoveParentingLA.com     Going, Going, Gone!     When I was eleven years old, I was slated to fly by myself from Los Angeles, California, across the country to Baltimore, MD, for a three-week holiday with my aunt and her family. My aunt was a curator of art and would take me to museums in Washington DC and even all the way to New York City for a cultural tour. I was adventurous by nature and thrilled about the trip. As my departure date neared, and my parents explained the details of my... read more

Air travel with kids can be full of excitement

Summer vacation time is here. Kids are out of school and it’s the time of year when many families start thinking about travel adventures. Having family living in France gives us the opportunity to make the journey every few years. Not often enough for our boys to see their “Meme” and “Pepe”. I wrote this story a few years ago when I traveled alone (my husband was to meet us later) with my two sons, then aged 4 and 6, on the long flight from Phoenix to London, then on to Lyon, France and finally a two hour drive to Fontaine a suburb of Grenoble. After a long... read more

The Two Best Rainy Day Activities for Kids in Northern California

The problem with going away is that it’s hard to come back to your “real” life. The free Jelly Belly factory tour in Fairfield, California (my cousin: “I can’t really imagine you guys doing that.”) was a smashing success with the kids. The tour includes free samples, historical videos, and lots of viewing of busy yellow robots and factory workers.James and the older kids before the Jelly Belly tour Silly hats are mandatory once the tour starts If you decide to go, arrive when they open. We got there at 9:15 a.m. and there were eight people ahead of us. We waited for... read more

In the Hotel Lobby on a Rainy California Morning

Everyone was going somewhere. My friend C. took her family to the Grand Canyon. B. wrote that they had just come back from a few days in Puerto Rico. My son’s reading coach was on her way to California to visit a beloved niece. But we were stuck. I was scrambling to finish some assignments, James trying to juggle the needs and decibel level of four children. The only surprising thing about this Spring “Break” is that Hesperus, our oldest (11.5), and Etani, our third (7), were actually getting along. When Hesperus gave Etani a hug goodnight, my jaw dropped to my ankles.... read more
