Lethal Pig Virus Found in Merck's Rotavirus Vaccine - Take Action Now

June 3, 2010 The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) joins with holistic health pioneer Dr. Joseph Mercola in calling for Merck to voluntarily recall its live rotavirus vaccine - RotaTeq – which is contaminated with parts of a lethal virus that infects pigs - porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) - and publicly pledge to clean-up the vaccine. Although on May 7th, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) publicly pledged to re-formulate its own rotavirus vaccine, Rotarix, by removing DNA from a non-lethal pig virus (PCV1). RotaTeq is contaminated with DNA from both PCV1 and PCV2. ... read more

American Academy of Pediatrics Retracts Statement, Had No Intention to Harm

Even though it’s Friday afternoon before Memorial Day weekend, Dr. Judy Palfrey, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found time to call me back to discuss the press release that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) sent yesterday about their position on clitorial “nicks.” In that release, the AAP made it absolutely clear that as an organization they are against any form of female genital mutilation and that they categorically retract the 2010 policy statement about female genital cutting. In their own words: “The AAP... read more

Guest Blogger Patty James on Eating the Rainbow

Because each colored vegetable and fruit has unique properties and there is strong evidence that there are interactions between the colors that are beneficial to your health. Eating by the Rainbow is vitally important to your well-being. Week Two: Body Tensing, Body Sensing

I meant to write this yesterday, but this week I’m a little behind on everything. I usually don’t give myself much slack, but with hubby away for three weeks the permission to slack off has been turned on. Example number one: an hour before he departed for the airport I flew to the store and bought the following items: 2 boxes of organic mini toaster waffles 2 boxes of chicken tikki massala frozen dinners 4 boxes of Amy’s organic pizza snacks 1 box of Pamela’s organic gluten free chocolate chip cookies (’cause mamma’s gotta... read more

Pre-polluted Babies

Our neighbor’s 14-year-old son has been battling leukemia for the past two years. My daughter’s classmate’s older sister died when she was eighteen of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. As parents we try so hard to keep our children safe and protected. The threat of cancer may seem amorphous: it’s not a contagious disease like the whooping cough that’s been going around our small town lately. But, according to a 240-page report by the President’s Cancer Panel, our babies are coming into the world “pre-polluted.” Exposure to harmful chemicals can be... read more

AAP Promotes Legalizing "Ritual Nick" of Girls' Genitals

May 17, 2010 Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement proposing changes to the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Act, a law that has prohibited any form of FGM in the United States since 1996. The AAP wants to change the law to allow a "ritual nick" of girls' genitals, so families whose cultures accept FGM don't send their daughters overseas for the full genital cutting procedure.Help Intact America let the AAP know that any form of genital cutting of babies is wrong – ethically, morally, and medically. We can't afford to allow our... read more

Delaying Vaccines

My son, now 19 months, has shown reactions to the DTaP shot after his 6 month and 9 month appointment, including fever and slight "head tremors". I expressed concern to my doctor after hearing more information about severe reactions to immunizations. At my son's 12 month appointment he received the DT instead of the DTaP. That evening, he developed a fever and was terribly unhappy. He is due for another round of shots and I am concerned to give him anything else. I have already expressed concern and my wishes to hold off on the MMR shot, but didn't know if I should wait... read more

Claudia's Doctrine of Perfection

  • by AdinaL administrator

When I was working for her (my first real design job* ), my friend and mentor Claudia taught me many things. But the one I probably refer to most often is this:The definition of perfection changes in relation to the amount of time remainingbefore a project is due.I’ve called on this precept many, many times in this deadline-oriented business of putting out a magazine. Here’s how it works.* * * * *Claudia: Laura, are you about done with those logos for the [insert client name here] presentation?Me (hesitantly): Um . . . I have some possibilities here but had hoped to get... read more

Week One: Well-Being

I’ve napped every day this week! Okay, it’s only Day Four but I’m going to hoot and hollar a bit anyway, especially as I was convinced that on Mothers Day I’d completely space out and forget to nap. I had already composed the “Loser Napper” blog entry in my mind. But, miracle of miracles, I remembered. My lack of normal brain fog might have been because Saturday night I returned with my hubby from two nights of hiking bits of the Appalachian Trail in West Virginia and Maryland and getting – please be seated – a total of twenty-one hours of sleep! I think the... read more
