Living in Uncertainty

  • by AdinaL administrator

Whenever I watch the reality TV show Giuliana & Bill, I tell my husband: “Their lives parallel ours!” (Well, except for the minor details that they are rich, famous, and beautiful.) She wants to live in L.A. He wants to live in Chicago. They go back and forth. I want to live in L.A. Ron wants to live in D.C. This winter, we’re going back and forth. They are experiencing infertility. We are experiencing infertility. She is concerned about what the hormone medication might do to her body; so am I. I hope she hooks up with Pulling Down the Moon in Chicago. I’d love... read more

Citta

Beth, our yoga instructor, took a dry erase marker and wrote a word I’d never seen before on the board: citta. “Citta. Anyone know what it means?” she asked. She pronounced the word chitta. I was attending an all-day fertility yoga workshop, and there were about ten of us sitting in a circle. Women began guessing: love breath wisdom “Um, it’s kind of a negative thing,” Beth hinted. I made no guesses. I was stumped. “Citta. Chatter. The stuff that goes on in our heads,” Beth said. “We have so much of it. A lot of it... read more

Celiac Disease and Fertility

“When was the last time you went to the doctor?” Ron asked. I thought he was kidding. As I try to get pregnant, it seems like I’m always at the doctor. If I’m not having my blood tested to check my hormone levels, I’m having a sonogram appointment to track my ovulation, or participating in a procedure known as IUI (intra-uterine insemination) where Ron’s sperm is deposited directly into my uterus by a catheter. “Not a fertility doctor; a general internist,” he clarified. Good question. I checked my records. I hadn’t had a regular checkup in over... read more

Just Relax!

If you are trying to get pregnant and it’s taking longer than you’d hoped, Just Relax! Ha ha. That was a joke. A little infertility humor, if you will. Because you will hear those two words over and over again. Doctors and practitioners love giving this advice. As do friends, family, and acquaintances. Years ago, when my friend Kari* was having trouble conceiving, I took her aside and told her the story my parents told me. They had tried and tried for a baby and couldn’t get pregnant. At the doctor’s office, the M.D. said, “Just relax.” So my parents took a... read more

Guest Blogger Brenda Strong (Mary Alice Young on Desperate Housewives) on Yoga for Fertility

Brenda Strong Taking life just as it is may sound easy. Doing it? Now that’s hard, but also necessary and ultimately liberating. There are gifts embedded in the accidents of fate that give existence its shape, meaning and richness – as the old adage goes, make your mess your message. In my case, the mess was secondary infertility. The message became my ability to help others heal through Yoga, mindfulness and acceptance. Mothering and nurturing myself was part of my journey. I was a 26-year-old actress making it happen in Los Angeles.... read more
