Come one, come all, come join the Dingoes!

We are a group of women who are united in the desire for forward motion, and we support each other in our quest to find balance and reason in our lives.

There are no requirements for joining the thread besides a desire to move forward. So, if you're just starting the couch to 5k or training for an ultramarathon, you belong here!

We post fast (figure ~1000 posts per month), and it's great when you follow along and encourage others. If you fall behind, it's just like your training schedule: Hop right back in and continue on.

DrJen below will post a list of pregnant dingoes, our race list, and the links to the question: Why are we called the dingoes?

So, post your intro and your goals, and we'll welcome you and cheer you on!

Edit: Spelling in title changed to reflect group consensus, though not necessarily English-language norms.

Edit II: We are the dingo pack: a bunch of badass women jet-setting around the country, b!tch-slapping, giving props, and holding babies.

gaye, I'm so sorry, how terribly frustrating.

i am trying to get my running Bible study together today and I just have no focus. i like how it's going so far so we'll see....just trying to advertise it now and see what happens!

all my ads are now for knee braces and stuff! crazy.

Eks....I think you could run a 10K in July for sure....and you could get at least a timed 10K by march so you wouldn't be in the back. atl dingoes, I think that I will not quite be up to it by then, so I'll probably do this one so I can wait a week. I know it's not OTP but it has wicking T shirts and a downhill finish if the other one doesn't work out for any of you.....

must go do some more work...I am still just thinking about my friend and the death and all that, so it's making it hard to focus. thankfully I don't have to do any pastoral visits today.

HBM - your run sounds like fun!
: but fun.

eksmom - what a positive, powerful workout report.
: your co-operates!

grnmtnmama - you so sound like you're having fun too.
Seamus is a great name.

HollysMom, sparkeltruck - I hope you get some sleep soon. That is way too early to start the day.

Lisa,
the call went well

JayGee - when I saw the school delays this morning my jaw dropped. We had rain only here.

MommaBelle, I hope you get that treadmill back in action soon. Thi is a bad time of year to be without.

MamaBeth,
: to your friend, this is a long, painful period for her. I hope her supports systems are rallying around her.

random thoughts:
It sounds like dailymile is very friendly. Maybe soon I'll have reason to mosey over there.

Atlanta dingos are so lucky to all be so close!

Chi Running really seems to stress form which is so different from the sources that say to run, just, run, do what comes naturally and have fun. These same places often go on to say that past age 6 something is out of whack.
I am really looking forward to delving into Chi Running and hearing more commentary here.

eksmom, sparkle, JayGee - thanks for all the help with the injury. I have been lifting so squats, lunges, leg extensions and curls are all being done. I try to watch form. I have a call into the college's athletic trainer, I have the phone book open to the orthos, a knee brace on the shopping list etc. I'll stop talking about it so we can get better ads.

It is SO hard to keep up with you guys!!

I did my three miles today (6/2) but, it was awful. I got so winded, and I was so blah. I felt like death until I came home and had a scoop of peanut butter. I guess I just didn't eat enough before hand. But, I am proud that I finished the whole three miles, even if I did have to walk more than I did on Saturday. And, it was only a minute slower. So, I suppose it isn't terrible.

If I wasn't training for something specific, today would be the day that would make me want to give up. Tough day.

Actually it was about 65 degrees and very humid.
And yes, we are very lucky to be close to one another. Mamabeth lives about a mile from me!

Cersha-crappy runs happen, but I like to think that the next run after a crappy one is going to be fantastic!

Geo-I hope the sitter shows up with a super-duper (and believable) excuse.
How's E's tummy doing?

ATL girls-I could go either way race wise. I'm not so sure my time would make a difference with my number anyway.

Jaygee-Boot camp sounds brutal!

geo~That really stinks. I hope it works out ok and you get this taken care of soon, I know how stressful it has to be for you!

mandy~I'm so happy for you that things are going well. It's a great feeling to be kicking butt and taking names!

mommajb~I'm not sure if you knew this, but I'm a certified athletic trainer, so that's great if you can get in to see one! That's a huge part of what we do, evaluate injuries and send them on to specialists if necessary. Does your DH work for the college? I know when I was in school and a GA ATC, we were always happy to help faculty members/family if they came in and asked nicely. Even when I was working in the high school, I was always willing to give advice for teachers/staff/coaches and their families. At the very least, they should be able to point you toward the right person to help you out.

jess~RE: the whole gp/specialist thing. I tend to agree with you to a point. My problem with it is that most (not all, but a good majority of) people don't know any better and take what their gp/family doc/even ER doc tells them as gospel, when in fact they may be giving them outdated or even incorrect information. GP/FM/ER are all wonderful doctors, but most have little to no training in sports injuries and for some reason, many won't refer on to a specialist or someone who DOES have training in sports med. I used to send kids to the doctor with what I knew with complete certainty was a torn ACL, and they'd come back with crutches and instructions to stay off it for 4-6 weeks. Um, that torn ACL is NOT going to heal itself!
I'm a big proponent of sending people to sports medicine specializing orthos not only because they're more likely to do the diagnostic studies to find out if something more serious is going on, but also (and honestly, mainly) because they're much more like than your average GP to write a PT referral. While some states do allow open access to PT, the truth is that almost all insurances require a prescription or they won't pay for it, so the doctors end up being the gatekeepers to PT. Hope that made sense, in a nutshell, I disagree with you a little, but I think we're way more in consensus than it sounds on the surface.
[/healthcare rant]

towson~I think that a good percentage of running injuries can be headed off by having good core strength. Certainly IT band/hip issues, and even some knee issues. The base (foot/shoe) is very important, too, but if you think about it, a weak core can cause all kinds of problems. A weak core can allow to much pelvic motion during running, which can throw off the back, hips, and on down the line. That certainly was my biggest problem in the spring with my ITB issues. Quad strengthening is definitely very important, too, since it helps control the motion of your kneecap. Those would be the two big things I would work on, core strength and quad strength.

Wow, I think that's the most I've used the professional side of my brain in a loooong time.
Not that that's a bad thing...especially if I need to contemplate going back to work again.
:

Thanks so much for all the support. It truly means the world to me. And I hope H has a wicked headache today from all those hammers!
I'm just SO. FRICKING. MAD. right now. I want to tell him to stop acting like a girl! So wishy-washy about his feelings and blah blah blah. He says that he just feels like there might be someone better out there for both of us. Well, maybe that's true. But you know what, we made a commitment to EACH OTHER, so that means that you're supposed to be a man about it and try to work it out when things get rough. ESPECIALLY when you JUST made the commitment to move back in and work on it!!! Anyway
, preaching to the choir here, I know...

At least in better news, it looks like my BIL is going to find a cheap plane ticket to come out and ski. I like BIL a lot, and it will give me a good excuse to get some more days up on the mountain!

Um, this got kind of long, sorry 'bout that...

I'm NAKing, so I hope I can make this make sense, but I so totally agree with you. Somewhere along the way I had to give up my notion that our marriage was a self-maintaining fairy tale. Love is a verb; it's a choice; it takes work. You can do that work with a different person, but it's still gonna be work (note: not drudgery, just work and effort).

to you mama.

Gaye - thanks for your professional perspective. Dh is at a college so we'll see if somebody will help me or at least clue me in on who to see locally. To be honest I struggle to keep everyone straight as busy as this thread gets. I have to make little notes to myself.
It reminds me of my first experience with Russian lit in that everybody has at least 42 names and I never know when we are all talking about the same person or somebody different. Gaye is also tjsmama and you really have to pay attention to context to know who MB is. Wow, I sound like an airhead.

I made some wretched brownies mixing in all the leftover crap from the holidays that I hadn't thrown away yet. I was sure I would hate them and would have no problem avoiding them but no. They are disgusting but in a good way. Now I'm off to wrestle with whiny girls on a sugar high.
at nobody but myself.

#289 ·
eks~Thank you. Exactly!

mommajb~No worries. I've mentioned it a few times, but probably not since you joined the thread so you probably didn't know. Just wanted to let you know where my at least somewhat educated opinion was coming from.
:

hbm, thanks for asking! He's doing much better. He's acting fairly normal. He's on medication for another week. Anti-nausea and heartburn. Yeah, my dog's on heartburn medication.
: I mentioned that he's neurotic, didn't I?

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention, but want to because I KNOW you all will understand and feel my pain...SOMEBODY, and I don't know who (but pretty sure it wasn't me) tossed DS's wool soaker in the diaper pail. I didn't see it and washed it with the diapers. Yeah, my $30 soaker, of which I only have two (well one now) is now a very teeny tiny XL.
: And of course, the other one really needs to be washed but since they generally don't dry between wake-up and bedtime, I guess I'll have to put DS in a sposie to wash it. Sigh. Does anyone have any favorite shopping sites for a toddler-sized wool soaker at a semi-reasonable price? The two I have (had) are Aristocrats, which are fine, but kinda boring. Since I HAVE to buy another one, I'd like to try to find something cute!

Gaye,
. It might be time to tell him to make a decision and stick with it already.

Geo, do you have an elementary ed program where you teach? Could you poach some of their students for childcare?

Decent 4m today, although my left middle toe hurts. WTH?
I'm guessing I stubbed it or something and didn't notice until I ran. It was beautiful and sunny out and I was finally dressed for the weather (in cute new capri running pants I got for $7, no less.)

not sure about cheap, but I recently loved my pull on interlock soakers, they wash up better than knitted.

I'm supposed to run 3 tonight, but feeling pretty low -- exhausted day teaching that didn't go great, no sitter, late dinner...

Yeah, they're hard to poach because of the times I need and the fact that most of those students work at the daycare center.

I responded to a cl ad. We'll see.

I guess I get to go put up signs in the psych building again. Yeehaw.

love this, very true. and you could totally do a 10k if you put your mind to it and got out there.

let me go look in my collection. I might have something for you... i'll pm you when i get downstairs.

HBM - that run sounded like loads of fun. a little adventure will make any run better.

Gigi - sounds so tempting to meet up, but with 8:30 am starts and dinners each night I think I'll be sticking to the jogging trail at the resort or the gym.

ATL ladies - do i need running tights or will I be okay in shorts and long sleeves for an AM run? Thursday and Friday mornings...

RR: i had to give my computer to the IT guys for an overnight update, and they wanted it before 4 so I slipped out of the office early and went to the gym for my ride. I had a dvd to watch. but the first bike - the tv wouldn't turn on. the other dvd bike was being used. the third AV bike had a working tv, but I wasn't getting any sound. after 15 minutes the girl got off the other bike and I switched, put the dvd in. I had Death at a Funeral, which came recommended. But there's so much whispering in it and the sound levels of the dvd player were weak and the noises from all the cardio equipment so loud that I could barely hear anything. So i turned it off but luckily found Blades of Glory playing without commercials on Comedy Central and that got me through for the rest of the 1.5 hours.

My heart rate monitor had some issues though. At one point it gave me a reading of 250 bpm! it went back to normal for a while, but then got stuck at 154 for the rest of the workout. bummer. i'll do a blog post on the Sigma one of these days, and unfortunately its not going to be very complimentary.

Lisa, I missed your earlier post about the training runs. I am not currently running much but I am signed up for them. We couldn't run together unless you want to reenact the torotoise and the hare (I'd be the tortoise) but we could chat before/after. Also, if I get a bug in my butt to go to Target or Indy or whatnot I'll let you know. I'd love to get together with another dingo even if only for coffee/tea or a run on one of your easy days.

Gaye, Baxter sounds well-medicated. I'm glad he is doing better.

Geo, Hopefully somebody came back this semester and is perfect for your and your dd! What a tough thing to be back and still struggling with the babysitter issue.

#296 ·
That would be awesome, Mandy, thanks!

I figured out the trainer, or at least well enough that I didn't crash in the comfort of my own living room.
I did an hour workout to the MOST BORING SPIN DVD EVER. Seriously, it was a guy walking around a room of people on bike trainers talking them through their workout. With porno-esque background music. It was a good workout, just booooooring. Not to mention that it was extremely oriented toward cadence and my borrowed trainers is NOT one of the fancy ones that tells you your rpms, so I just had to guess. Oh well, at least I know I can get a bike workout in my living room now, and hopefully the Spinervals dvd that I got for xmas is better than the lame CTS Trainright one!

Oh yeah, and DS napped!
: Only a little over an hour, I think, but that's a big improvement!

Ok, I think this is like my 87th post here today, are you all sick of me yet???

#297 ·
We'd never be sick of you, Gaye
. Post away! Cool that you can put your trainer in the livingroom. My DH would hemmorhage if I even suggested it. So I'm stuck in the garage, with no TV or DVD player. Wanna hear about bo-ring....

RM and Mommajb ~ I'd love to do the 10K and/or 15K training runs. RM, I drive right by your house on my way into Indy, so it would be great to carpool from there. It depends on where I am with my training, but I hope to run both in the 7:30-8:00min/mi area.

#299 ·
Gaye--so sorry about your DH's behavior and the soaker. I'd give you one of DD's, but she never made it to that size (not that I'm complaining). Yay for the nap and a workout though.

Geo--ugh about babysitters.

I walked 2 on the TM tonight after the meeting at church, and now I'm off to work on diss revisions before bed. And hopefully do some sit ups too.

Okay, I'm planning out my workouts, I'm having the positive attitude, I'm doing my part - why is the universe out to get me? Today I have admitted 8 patients to the hospital already. 4 sick adults (of which one is my own elderly nursing home patient and 3 were "no-doctor" patients through the ER), 1 10 day old infant sick with RSV (my 4 hour+ push marathon baby), 1 very sick 35 wk pregnant lady with severe pre-eclampsia and intrauterine growth restiction, and then a little later, her 3 lb 8 oz 35 week baby daughter born by repeat cesarean section, and another finally, another client in early labor - who is now in active labor. Once she has her baby and I get him admitted, that will make 9 for the day. And my cesarean section rate for 2009 so far is 66.6%.
:

I'm going to try to go get a few hours sleep under the hope that after I take my kids to school tomorrow, I can round on the 11 patients I'll have in the hospital by then (my mom and baby from the Saturday cesarean birth are still here) and sleep a couple hours before they get out of school, and maybe I'll be functional enough to run a little tomorrow night.

I've been reading along, and thinking of you all, but I'm just too tired to put together personals. Thanks for putting up with me.

#301 ·
drjen. Wish we could help you somehow.
I hope you get some rest soon.

mbelle, you figure that TM out? I'm paranoid now about mine.

I need to do strength exercises today. I figure I'll walk on the TM a little to warm up and just do my squats, planks, pushups, etc. I have not had time to add them after running so far this week.
