Hi everyone,

I am looking for any recipes for making ice cream or milkshakes out of my breast milk. My MIL has leukemia, and I've read that breast milk has strong anti-cancer properties, and helps combat the side-effects of chemo. So I'm trying to find ways to make it appetizing for her. I've tried googling, but to no avail. Any ideas or recipes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Di

No recipes (I don't know of any place where you'd find something like that, but I have to give you a

!!). I'd think that you'd be able to do a regular recipe, but you'd have to seperate the fat from your BM - just put it in the fridge over night and skim off the fat.

I had to post to you!

I think its wonderful that you are doing this for your MIL. I went through cervical cancer last year and had a good friend donate breastmilk to me. I didn't have any recipe per say but this is what I did... I would but chocolate syrup in it sometimes. I'd also stick it in the blender with some frozen berries, the milk I had was already frozen so it made kinda a slushy. I also added milk and ice cream to it to make a milk shake but w/out adding cows milk it was just a slushy. A few times when I made myself mac and cheese and knew I'd be the only one eating it I'd use the breastmilk instead.

Good luck to your MIL and I hope that the bm helps her feel as good as it did me!!

Right on, I just started pumping for my sister, so we are in the same spot. I was just going to tell her to blend it with some berries. Berries have all sorts of good antioxidant qualities to them and will cover up that metalic flavor that seems to happen in frozen breastmilk.

I may be misremembering, but isn't there some info out there about not agitating/shaking up the bm too much, so as not to damage the live cells it contains? I always read when about to use EBM not to shake it to mix the fat back in but to swirl it gently.

What a great idea, to share your milk this way, I know I have seen recipes... hmm...

Here's one that you might be able to adapt by making a very thick smoothie, then stirring in the breastmilk and freezing:

Excellent point - you're right. I'd make sure you stir in the BM to whatever smoothie you're making and not put it in the blender.

first of all...i think this is amazing. i've seen some research about breastmilk and cancer and showed it to my dh, whose paternal grandmother has cancer. unfortunately, this family is so anti-breastfeeding (we are actually currently black sheep of the family due to a nip issue!)

but i've always thought how sad it is that the grandmom is dying of this malignancy, all the while my milk could possibly help her.

anyways...

i would also think that blending/agitating the milk too much wouldn't be good, so as pp's have mentioned, i would make a regular smoothie with whatever milk (almond milk in particular makes wonderful creamy smoothies), blended with whatever fruit strikes your mil's fancy, then stir the bm in right before she drinks it.

i wish your mil health and vitality.

I have seen one, in a book I had....... I loaned it out. And I can't think of the name of it right now. The cover is blue and it is all about breastfeeding.

Great idea! The immunological properties should be benefical.
