Can't say he is depressed (in the clinical sense); you will need a professional for that but it is good to keep in mind that he is young and kids moods and emotions are more susceptible to changes (sometimes dramatic swings).  He does seem unhappy at school though and feels things are not going well for him. This is probably what he is reacting to.     It helps to remember that any one (including adults, let alone a 6 year old) will be down if they have to spend hours a...
Exactly what I meant, Miranda, although not as clear as you put it!  Thank you for pointing that out. When I talk about "delaying academics" I am talking about formal instruction. Will edit my post to reflect that.
I have daughter who is 5 1/2 year old and we haven't done any formal, parent led homeschooling with her. However, if we pull up the state guide lines for a kinder, I am sure she will meet most of the expectations, exceed some of them and is below in other areas. It is just the way learning goes when it happens organically. For example, last summer she asked for some "math books" after seeing her brother work on some. I got her pretty simple Kumon workbooks. She did a few...
@SweetSilver Ha!  I send my kiddos out in our apartment complex with walkie talkies and it used to unsettle me but now I am pretty used to it. The kids seem to deal adeptly with situations that arise.  Thanks for the cookbook recs. Will check them out.   Miranda, I started watching Call the Midwife -- soooo good!   Welcome @albanyaloe :) Sounds like you and your kids are doing great.  Dd is suddenly interested in parachutes, para gliders, and hot air balloons.  She asked...
Hi! Welcome to mothering :)    You may want to head to the http://www.mothering.com/community/f/234/single-parenting to connect with other single mamas like you. We also have the Childhood and Beyond area at http://www.mothering.com/community/f/17512/childhood-and-beyond  where you can hang out with parents of kids all ages.    I hope you find all the support you are looking for.   E.
I did the same thing as Miranda.  I basically told my husband "Come on, how badly can I screw up 1st grade!?" and he agreed for a one year experiment.  Because I started out as a relaxed homeschooler (disregarded subjects entirely and didn't buy a box curriculum), he was even more nervous.  I started out by working on reading alone.  Math only entered the picture after son was on his way to becoming quiet the reader. By then my husband was fully convinced and I was happily...
My son has mastered making chapatis.  I still supervise but he is pretty much doing it all on his own; I am just nearby just in case.  He made some for breakfast this morning. Perfect. He loves making bread.  We generally make pita bread and chapatis because I find they are the most versatile in terms of use :) He asked if he could get a cook book; any recommendation for a kid friendly cook book, preferably one that doesn't have recipes that produce a lot of mess?  I am...
Whoa! lol!  I had no idea. I just looked these brands up out of curiosity and it does, indeed, look like baby wearing has hit the high end market. I just got a long stretchy fabric and learned how to tie it around my body in a way that was supportive of my back and it worked really well and was cheap :) Phew!
Hi Peachesl, welcome again :)  I replied to your other post but now that I know more, here are additional boards I recommend.     Special needs parenting: http://www.mothering.com/community/f/157/special-needs-parenting The Childhood years: http://www.mothering.com/community/f/65/the-childhood-years Education: http://www.mothering.com/community/f/43/education Preteens and teens: http://www.mothering.com/community/f/39/preteens-and-teens   Enjoy!
