What kind of yarn were you using? Did you make a tester swatch and felt it? Different yarns felt at different rates, so you really have to keep a close eye on the washing machine during the felting process.
I bought a drop spindle and some wool top a couple of months ago. I really need to get it out and try my hand at spinning. I think my subconscious keeps putting me off, because I know I'll get addicted to it and never want to stop.
Knit Socks! (the hardback book shaped like a sock) is a good beginner sock book as well. Congrats on tackling socks!
