Is his face damp? Perspiration may be irritating him. We co-sleep and my son begins to rub his face when he is sweating, sometimes enough to wake.
I would likely put off socializing, at least with the children present, for several months and see if the child's behavior changes. Basically as pp said.

I cannot speak for the school books but I do have an older medical book perhaps early to mid 1900's and the penis is intact. Where as a medical book from 2000 the penis is circumcised.
