There a lots of good theme parks!  Great America and Six Flags probably suit the older kids.  We love Happy Hollow for the little kid rides.  Santa Cruz has a beach front theme park too.   We live in Campbell.  It's nothing amazing in terms of crunchy but there is a great farmer's market and lots of attachment parenting, organic eating families around.  Our preschool is full of full term breastfeeders, cosleepers, organic healthy eaters etc.  Most of the parents send...
We live in the south bay/silicon valley area and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any midwives in the area who do appointments in your home?   Looking on a few of their websites most seem to do office visits.  I know I can call them and ask but I was hoping to narrow the list of midwives to call if anyone can give me a point in the right direction?   Thanks so much!!! xx
Thanks so much for everyone's replies!  Sorry it's taken me a long time to come back and post.  I've been pondering it all and I still can't decide if th illegal births is a deal breaker for the move.  There are so many benefits to us moving, and we're still unsure we'll have another so it's hard to know how much importance to place on a type of birth that may not even happen.   I think I'm nervous about birthing in the states full stop.  I saw someone's home birth...
Thank you so much.  You've been such a huge help.  It sounds sort of similar to Australia in that there you pretty much can't get any insurance coverage for a homebirth.  Our homebirth there cost about $5K, but that was for two midwives attending.   I had heard birth in the US cost about $20K so I was kind of freaking out about what you do if insurance doesn't cover it!  I really should work out how the HSA thingo works.  The american health care system confuses the...
Thank you so much!  That helps heaps!!  And all great news.   Can I ask why you changed MWs for each birth?  Just wondering if there is an issue with the MWs in the area.   We would most likely just decide on our insurance by the one my husband's work offers, so I guess then we're locked into MWs who accept that type of insurance?  Is the $4-5K cost based on what it costs after insurance, or without insurance?   Thanks for your help.  I'll look at that list...
I tried reading Birthing from Within during my first pregnancy but I came to realise I honestly had no fear of birth so I just couldn't relate to it.     I was, and still am, a sook with most pain.  I did get a bit anxious during my pregnancy when I had some muscle spasm pain in my arm and I started flipping out and ran for panadol.  But then I found I coped so well with pain in labour.  It was really empowering to see how strong I really am.  I did find labour hurt...
So much wonderful wisdom here and I'm glad you're taking your power back.  You're a wonderful mumma for preparing a homebirth for your bubba.   I had a homebirth in Melbourne :)  There's a great homebirth community around... your midwife will be able to get you connected.  I was living in G'borough so let me know if I can help with contacts in that area.
Hi everyone :)   My husband and I are considering moving to San Francisco or the San Francisco Bay area next year and I wanted to find out more about the home birth scene there.   We're currently living in Seattle but we're from Australia and had our last baby at home in Australia so we don't know the "system" very well in the US... and I know it varies a lot by state anyway.  We would like to have another baby in about 18 months-2 years so we need to know if...
Oh I meant to add... how far north are you talking?  I'm on the north side of the city in Ballard so not very far north.
Ha!  I just posted an intro post... I'm an attachment parent and our family is on GAPS, recovering my son from autism.  So we're "extremist WAPF" LOL   Life is crazy busy for us... my day seems consumed with taking my eldest to and from preschool in the morning, then putting the youngest down for a nap, then the big one down for a nap, then cooking dinner...   I would love to start meeting some crunchy WAPF-sy people and my house is pretty good for catchups on...
