After being off the fish oil for a week, I retested my milk and found that I don't need to scald if I'm not taking the fish oil....It may be that I'm sensitive to the fish oil for some reason, or maybe it was the kind I was taking...Anyway, I'm happy to not have to scald! I'll add Omega 3 into my diet by other means and maybe add the fish oil back in a smaller dose in the future. Thank you for the message. Great pic with your babes by the way!
Agreed. I'm in the test phase to sort out if it's true lipase or the fish supplements. Thank you 1st time mama! I'm a 1st timer myself. Best of luck!
I hope you enjoy them as much as I did! Lisa was on call when I delivered and also cared for me postpartum and I loved her style. Lynette and Lylaine were also wonderful every time I met with them and I would have been more than comfortable having any of them on call when I delivered. I think they also have a new midwife, who I didn't get to meet.   I would definitely recommend hiring a doula also! I delivered in a hospital, which although good, has it's obvious...
The midwives at Bethany Home Women's Center (Bethany Home Rd and 37th Ave) are amazing! I traveled an hour each way for their care and it was more than worth it. They have privileges at Phx Baptist Hospital and are apparently opening a birth center of their own at the hospital, which I was hoping to deliver at (DS born in February 2011), but there have been delays in opening. You might check on their timeline for opening it if you're interested.
Well, scalding helped quite a bit! But given your experience, I'm less worried now. I'll hold on to my fishy stash of milk and my husband can experiment with giving fishy bottles and mixing fishy with fresh or scalded milk ;) Thank you so much for your responses and giving me hope! I now feel like I have several options and can make it work.  W
Unfortunately, I do not have any new ideas, but nonetheless, wanted to offer my support. My son is 10 wks old (first baby) and I've had some similar BF challenges- intense nipple pain, poor milk transfer, undiagnosed problems, etc... though latch appears okay. A high palate and subtle tongue tie  were also  suggested but never diagnosed and a swallow/feeding specialist was recommended. Over the past several weeks something has shifted and my pain is subsiding, though...
Thank you for your response! That gives me hope that I will not have to waste all my stored milk! And loving fish oil and fish down the road could definitely be a plus. Did you ever try scalding it before freezing to see if that made any difference? I'm in the process of trying that now, but I'm not sure how long to leave it frozen before testing (is a day or two enough?)...and I certainly don't want to get into the habit of scalding everything I pump if it doesn't make...
My frozen milk has a distinct fish odor and taste. Yuck! I take Omega-3 supplements daily and I'm thinking this is the cause. I'm in the test phase of scalding the milk before I freeze to see if that will help. In the meantime, I've stopped taking the supplements. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience and could share anything she found helpful. My baby rejected some of it and drank some (seemed to like it better cold than heated), but he's still getting...
