Not to add another item to the room but I find if the child had a personal place to store his/her things, they can be introduced to added the responsibility of keeping things organized. I would look at www.kidschairs.com for toyboxes and chairs that would be a great addition to a child's room. 
This is the challenge of guys and gals alike. What worked for my wife and I (as well as occupying the childern) was to plan a daily walking event. You would be surprised to see what 30 minutes out and about can do for fitness and burning off that extra energy. Great for the mind as well!
Great looking kid! Looks like he takes good care of his hair which keeps the length from being an issue. How's his school teachers' reaction?
